2001: A Space Odyssey
The following paper will analyze the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick” and “The Centinel” by Arthur C. Clarke. Although there are many themes present between the story and the film, the following are the most dominant. I will be discussing Scientific themes, Religious and Moral Themes, and Clarke’s development of the short story into a full-length film.
The first issue, I will be discussing the scientific themes of the movie. The movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey,” has a one of a kind vision of science and technology. The movie “2001” brings a great new style of reality and realism to space technology and travel. Since there was no great technology in 1968 and space travel was not as well defined as today, Kubrick stayed away from fantasy and focused more on reality of space travel, a scientific theme throughout the movie. “2001” definitely shows the viewer the outer space in a very effective way. The outer space is large and empty, which Kubrick displays very well. His computer, HAL 9000, is one of the most popular computers in my opinion. HAL 9000 is a big machine, and speaks like we expect machines to speak, and is apparently designed to have some emotion. HAL 9000 was built to be invincible with very little flaws and that characteristic is typical to be put in movies, illustrating the point that often movies have too much faith and trust in machines. HAL 9000 was designed to f...
After evaluating the 2081 movie, it is apparent the film elements and techniques are important when defining the mood. The four main techniques used throughout the film were lighting, music, sound, and dialogue.
Peter and the Starcatcher, by Rick Elice, takes the audience on an adventurous journey through the sea and to a distant island were many different groups of people from different parts of the world are on the search for a trunk filled with treasure. Throughout the journey the audience gets to see a variety of characters that range from orphans to captains, pirates, natives, and even mermaids. The audience also witness confident, strong leaders who become heroes and create bonds of love and friendships towards the end of the show. I attended the Clarence Brown Theatre performance of Peter and the Starcatcher on September 16, 2017 and witness actor’s expressions of emotions and personalities through their movements. Some of the movements that stood out to me occurred in the characters of the boy, the pirates and the mermaids. Through the observations of their movements I got a chance to better understand those characters and their behaviors/wants.
Kubrick wanted to accomplish a Sci-Fi film with colossal scientific proportions. His ambition was to believe reasons to believe in life outside the planet, and the impact that it would have to the human race. He learned from the books, “Childhood’s End” and “the
I believe that E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is the best movie of all time and here is why. The film E.T. directed by Steven Spielberg, was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Not to mention E.T. superseded Star Wars: A New Hope as the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States. Also, this movie was filmed in chronological order so the emotion between the characters were real which resulted an emotional response from the audience. Finally, E.T. is a timeless film, any age or generation can enjoy it because of its universal
In a court of law, killing while mentally disabled, killing under orders and killing in self-defense are sufficient justifications for taking another’s life. With this in mind, was HAL justified in killing the crewmembers of the discovery, or were Hal’s actions murderous and should he be brought to trial? Can Hal be blamed? The computer basically has 3 excuses for killing the crewmembers of the Discovery. First, Hal was disabled. Second, Hal was killing under orders. Lastly, Hal was killing in self-defense.
In the beginning there was a team of explorers made up of soldiers and scientists traveling through a Stargate, an ancient portal to other planets. They use the Stargate to explore new worlds, forge ties with friendly civilizations and protect Earth from hostile forces. In modern-day Egypt, professor Daniel Jackson teams up with retired Army Col. Jackson to unlock the code of an interstellar gateway to an ancient Egypt-like world. They arrive on a planet ruled by the despotic Apophis who holds the key to the Earth travelers' safe return. Now, in order to escape from their intergalactic purgatory, Colonel Jackson must convince the planet's people that Apophis must be overthrown.
I was charmed by this film the first time I saw it, and every time since. It was the synthesis of the journey of mankind into the future and an argument for space as mankind’s ultimate destination. It was the best science fiction film I had ever seen, as it presented several different possibilities and scenarios of what could happen as well as what might happen to man in his quest to conquer space. The introduction of the computer as an artificial intelligence was an added plus. The idea of a machine making the same mistakes as any human being proved out in its own statement: that any glitches in its operating parameters had to be due to human error. Given that machines are incapable of emotions like guile, hatred, fear and sorrow, HAL was nearly as emotional as any organic being. This in itself was a glorious foil for man’s ambitions to discover the wonders of deep space.
This episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation begins with a performance from Data and his quartet. Data tells Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher they may want to wait for the next performance, since his peers in the group believes he lacks “soul” in his playing. Picard sends a valuable message to Data and the viewers; never advertise your shortcomings. Picard insists on hearing Data play, and of course, as the concert starts, the Enterpirse is hailed by the Sheliak. They, by treaty, with the Federation have ownership of Tau Cygna V, however, there are human inhabitants colonized there. They demand the removal of this “infestation” immediately, and Picard is reluctantly happy to oblige. Upon arrival, it is discovered that the radiation levels in the planet’s atmosphere are so
The many debates about art cinema versus classical cinema have been going around for a while. The mainstream Hollywood classical film and the art cinema are frequently presented as opposites. In one, the style of the film is bland, while the other seeks to center its focus on the visual becoming central as narrative unity. Throughout the movie directed by Stanley Kubrick called 2001: A Space Odyssey, we see that this film can be classified as an art film. On the other hand, it can also be seen as classical film. Even though these two are the complete opposite and they contradict themselves, they are both apparent in the film.
In the ad, the subtexts are basically telling viewers that women can be easily persuaded to want someone regardless of the circumstances if they are wearing the Old Spice deodorant, cologne, etc. The ethos of the ad was severely weakened because of this message. Women can view this as sexist, stereotypical, and demeaning because it suggests women only care about the way men smell and will be attracted to their odor rather than their personality or even appearance. It is especially offensive to the more beautiful women for it depicts them as narrow-minded, seductively eating ice cream, willing to throw themselves at any man wearing the
Winner of the 2010 Grand Prix for film at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial for the Portland ad agency Wieden+Kennedy. Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” ads advertising campaign took on a life of its own, spilling into social media and becoming the object of debates. Some media outlets, like CBS News, asked, “Is the Old Spice Guy ‘Post-Racial’ or Just Another ‘Mandingo’?” (Edwards, 2010). These surface readings do not impress when the advertisements are critically interrogated though the lens of critical race and gender theories that draw on Marxist and psychoanalytic themes.
Patients, survivors or caregivers can call or go on the ACS website to get information. Patients can also find support and treatment topics. For example, patients can receive help in understanding their diagnosis, find and pay for treatments. Lastly, there are tools that help cope with cancer treatments. Some examples of treatment tools are finding a treatment center, clinical trials, services and a guide to prescribed
The movie "Matrix" is drawn from an image created almost twenty-four hundred years ago by the greek philosopher, Plato in his work, ''Allegory of the Cave''.The Matrix is a 1999 American-Australian film written and directed by the Wachowski brothers. Plato, the creator of the Allegory of the Cave was a famous philosopher who was taught by the father of philosophy Socrates. Plato was explaining the perciption of reality from others views to his disciple Aristotle. The Matrix and the Allegory of the Cave share a simmilar relationship where both views the perciption of reality, but the Matrix is a revised modern perciption of the cave. In this comparison essay I am going to explain the similarities and deifferences that the Matrix and The Allegory of the Cave shares. In the Matrix, the main character,Neo,is trapped in a false reality created by AI (artificial intelligence), where as in Plato's Allegory of the Cave a prisoner is able to grasp the reality of the cave and the real life. One can see many similarities and differences in the film and the allegory. The most important similarity was between the film and the Allegory is the perception of reality.Another simmilarity that the movie Matrix and the Allegory of the Cave shares is that both Neo and the Freed man are prisoners to a system. The most important difference was that Neo never actually lived and experienced anything, but the freed man actually lived and experinced life.
...the predominant theme of disorientation and lack of understanding throughout the film. The audience is never clear of if the scene happening is authentic or if there is a false reality.

Old spice man asks his audience this question as he transitions from the bathroom, to the sailboat, and riding on a horse. The commercial ends with Old Spice man saying he’s on a horse. The camera zooms out and unveils to the audience that he was sitting on top of the horse. The Old Spice commercial targets their male audiences on how to attract a woman and what woman description of a perfect man. The company able to grabs their audience’s emotion and thinking that the Old Spice body wash can convert man into being perfect. The commercial uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to persuade the audience to buy the Old Spice body wash; however, the company had reach connection to females but targets male audience.
