During this experiment, a reaction was conducted in order to convert 2-methylcyclohexanone to 2-methylcyclohexanol, using sodium borohydride as a reagent. Once the reaction was deemed to be completed, the product was ran through an IR and NMR machine. The results from each machine will serve as a way to confirm the formation of our product. The information from the data revealed the transition of 2-methylcyclohexanon to 2-methylcyclohexanol after the reaction. The information and techniques used in this lab, can be applied to manufacturing techniques that are used in many industries. Such industries range from food to textile. The purpose of the Unknown White Compound Lab was to identify the unknown compound by performing several experiments. Conducting a solubility test, flame test, pH paper test, ion test, pH probe test, conductivity probe test, and synthesizing the compound will accurately identified the unknown compound. In order to narrow down the possible compounds, the solubility test was used to determine that the compound was soluble in water. Next, the flame test was used to compare the unknown compound to other known compounds such as potassium chloride, sodium chloride, and calcium carbonate. The goal of this two week lab was to examine the stereochemistry of the oxidation-reduction interconversion of 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol and 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone. The purpose of first week was to explore the oxidation of an alcohol to a ketone and see how the reduction of the ketone will affect the stereoselectivity. The purpose of first week is to oxidize the alcohol, 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol, to ketone just so that it can be reduced back into the alcohol to see how OH will react. The purpose of second week was to reduce 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol from first week and determine the effect of the product's diastereoselectivity by performing reduction procedures using sodium borohydride The chemicals for this lab are sodium hypochlorite, 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone
This week’s lab was the third and final step in a multi-step synthesis reaction. The starting material of this week was benzil and 1,3- diphenylacetone was added along with a strong base, KOH, to form the product tetraphenylcyclopentadienone. The product was confirmed to be tetraphenylcyclopentadienone based of the color of the product, the IR spectrum, and the mechanism of the reaction. The product of the reaction was a dark purple/black color, which corresponds to literature colors of tetraphenylcyclopentadienone. The tetraphenylcyclopentadienone product was a deep purple/black because of its absorption of all light wavelengths. The boiling point of the product was conducted with the silicone oil. Lastly, for each chemical test, three test tubes were prepared with 2-methylcyclohexanol, the product, and 1-decene in each test tube, and a drop of the reagent were added to test tubes. The percent yield was calculated to be 74.8% with 12.6g of the product obtained. This result showed that most of 2-methylcyclohexanol was successfully dehydrated and produced the product. The loss of the product could be due to the incomplete reaction or distillation and through washing and extraction of the product. The boiling point range resulted as 112oC to 118oC. This boiling point range revealed that it is acceptable because the literature boiling point range included possible products, which are 1-methylcyclohexene, 3-methylcyclohexene, and methylenecyclohexane, are 110 to 111oC, 104oC, and 102 to 103 oC. For the results of IR spectroscopy, 2-methylcyclocahnol showed peaks at 3300 cm-1 and 2930 cm-1, which indicated the presence of alcohol and alkane functional group. Then, the peak from the product showed the same peak at 2930 cm-1 but the absence of the other peak, which indicated the absence of the alcohol
The purpose of this experiment involved synthesis of diphenylmethanol using phenylmagenisum bromide and benzaldehyde, using the method called Grignard reaction. Grignard reactions are an important method for new carbon-carbon bond formation as well as for the synthesis of alcohols.
The goal of this lab is to exemplify a standard method for making alkyne groups in two main steps: adding bromine to alkene groups, and followed by heating the product with a strong base to eliminate H and Br from C. Then, in order to purify the product obtained, recrystallization method is used with ethanol and water. Lastly, the melting point and IR spectrum are used to determine the purity of diphenylacetylene.

The purpose of this lab was to determine what vegetation was present above and below the water’s surface and to observe the water visibility depth. We took sampling data from the two different lakes at Noxubee Refuge. The two lakes were Bluff Lake and Loakfoma Lake. The Bluff lake consists of 800 acres of the Noxubee Refuge, and Loakfoma Lake consists of 400 acres (About the Refuge). Many different wildlife species are present at these two lakes. The wildlife includes migratory waterfowl, shoreline birds, and alligators. We observed all three of these wildlife species while collecting data. Along with the wildlife, there are many different plant species to observe. The plant species consist of upland species and bottomland species.
I believe that the first unknown solution is made up of molecular compounds. This is because the solution had very little conductivity, meaning there was not an equal amount of ions broken down in the solution. The solution had no scattering, which means the molecular compounds were fully dissolved in their solvent, which was not water. When tap water was added to solution 1, the color changed from green to blue. If water was the original solvent, we would not see this color change. The absorption spectrum follows most of what the color green would absorb on its own: red, blue, and purple wavelengths. However, there was some absorption of the green wavelength. The reaction of (-)-α-phellandrene, 1, and maleic anhydride, 2, gave a Diels-Alder adduct, 4,7-ethanoisobenzofuran-1,3-dione, 3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-5-methyl-8-(1-methylethyl), 3, this reaction gave white crystals in a yield of 2.64 g (37.56%). Both hydrogen and carbon NMR as well as NOESY, COSY and HSQC spectrum were used to prove that 3 had formed. These spectroscopic techniques also aided in the identification of whether the process was attack via the top of bottom face, as well as if this reaction was via the endo or exo process. These possible attacks give rise to four possible products, however, in reality due to steric interactions and electronics only one product is formed.
As a final point, the unknown secondary alcohol α-methyl-2-naphthalenemethanol had the R-configuration since it reacted the fastest with S-HBTM and much slower with R-HBTM. TLC was a qualitative method and ImageJ served as a quantitative method for determining which reaction was the faster esterification. Finally, 1H NMR assisted in identifying the unknown from a finite list of possible alcohols by labeling the hydrogens to the corresponding peaks.

Enantiomers, a type of isomer, are non-superimposable, mirror images of each other. Diasteriomers, another type of isomer, are non-superimposable, non-mirror images of each other. Dimethyl maleate and dimethyl fumarate are diasteriomers, as they are not mirror images but instead vary in the orientation of the carbomethoxy groups around the double bond. Dimethyl maleate is the cis-isomer because both groups are on the same side and dimethyl fumarate is the trans-isomer because the two groups are on opposite sides. A bromine free radical mechanism was required for this conversion. First, energy from light is required to create two bromine free radicals from Br2. Then one of the free radicals attacks the double bond in dimethyl maleate, breaking it and creating a carbon radical on the other carbon. The bond then rotates and reforms, freeing the bromine radical and creating the trans-isomer, dimethyl fumarate. Bromine in this reaction is acting as a catalyst in this reaction and then cyclohexane is added at the end to neutralize the bromine free radicals. The activation reaction of the radical reaction is lower than the activation energy of the addition reaction, which is why it occurred more quickly. This reaction was successful because the percent yield was 67.1%, which is greater that 65%. It also demonstrated the expected principles, as the reaction did not occur without the presence of both light and bromine.
