The 1993 film Calendar by Atom Egoyan was very interesting to me because it showed the transition from past to present and then it would switch back to past. This was interesting because is added this subjectivity and symbolism within the film. Another thing that I found interesting was the relationship between the characters, settings and symbols that added to the structure of the film. The film Calendar speaks to the notions of subjectivity through the shots and frames, structure and symbols within the film. The shots and frames speak to the notions of subjectivity In the parts where Atom Egoyan is behind the camera taking photos of the churches to put in his calendar, the camera is pretty much at eye level and is at a view of the scenery. His wife and their tour guide speak to him from a distance with no zooming in on the characters as they speak. For example, wine and church. Wine has religious ties that might relate to one another. Another example is the voicemails from his wife could be his reason for listening in on the women when they are on the phone. Then he writes letters asking about how his ex-wife is doing. This could symbolize not being able to get over what he had and longing to get a chance to start over. This could add to notions of subjectivity by replacing feelings and emotions of a character with physical symbols. In conclusion, Calendar by Atom Egoyan speaks to the notion of subjectivity. First, through its shots and frames, which help with adding subjectivity to characters in the film.
