1930’s Swing Music The 1930’s, the beginning of the depression, over 3.2 million people were unemployed, the stock market falling more and more every day, vets not getting their pay for the war, to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the start of world war two. But in the mid 1930’s it was almost a peaceful time, it was a break of war, killing, scamming, and any other ways of harmfulness, and that's when the mother of music came. A revolutionary style of music, which surprisingly did not last long, but a style that everyone will remember. This music type was called swing. Many known swing artists are still known today; such as the Crosby brothers, the Andrew sisters, Ted Lewis, and Annette Hanshaw. Many of these artists got their fame from their performances, and the need of cheerful music. Like Ted Lewis, who got his fame from the song ironically named ‘is everybody happy?’ which became known by millions of people, Bing Crosby also got a kick start of his career by broadcasting a two hour radio station. and his brother Bob Crosby, who got his start by joining a band named the bobcats. Many record industries were getting their kicks out of all the people listening to the music they helped produced. But as bars and pubs became more popular because of the music and performance, so did the alcohol. Soon there were tragic events that started to happen more frequently, such as car accidents, and the sudden increase of crime. Many people such the victims of these crimes, and the drinkers blamed the alcohol for making them intoxicated. That's when the prohibition act of alcohol in 1933 was applied. With fewer and fewer people listening to swing at the pubs, the music producers got a chance to spread swing to the entire world. With the prohibition act of alcohol was finally getting resolved, there was a sense of resolution, for in the mid 30’s swing was pumping out radios, jukeboxes, and cars everywhere.
