What if basketball was never invented? What would kids do in their free time instead of basketball? To understand the origins of basketball and how it developed over the years, a closer look at basketball history is necessary.
In the 1930’s basketball was a popular sport. In the 30’s basketball courts and gear were less regulated than today. “Basketball was born in the mind of an Ontario man [...] who founded the first team at Kansas [...]” (Winn 1). This is a past time that everybody enjoys. “Allen had prototypes constructed for practice and spent decades lobbying the NCAA rules [...]” (Winn 1). “Schools in the southeastern want blacks to play in their school” (Deford 3). The school’s realized that the blacks are really athletic and wanted the blacks to play for the school’s basketball team. “People are happy that some schools are letting black people go in schools” (Deford 3). It is finally decided that all african americans should be able to go to school.
Lots of women were not allowed to play because of their gender. “Passing an entrance exam to morehouse college allowing women to get a good education but can not play on a basketball team” (Davis 3). School’s did not allow women to play because the schools did not think that women are not athletic. “Women were not allowed to play until the 1955 when they let men play” (Davis 4). It is hard for girls because so many people were saying that girls are not athletic as guys are.
Basketball players were not paid all as well and did not play as hard and they looked up to legends. “Smith is Abe Lincoln in a sports world” (Reilly 2). Both Abe and Smith include blacks in their activities. “In today’s scandal-dripping land of college basketball, couldn’t we all use a little of Dean Smith” (Reilly 2).
