As once Martin Luther King Jr. said “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Humans are imperfect and contain fatal flaws such as lacking fairness in vast situations. In today’s modern time, many obstacles lack righteousness such as the court system. In Twelve Angry Men, Reginald Rose conveys the theme injustice through his characterization of contrasting juror 3 and juror 8 using character foil and the extensive archetypal use of light vs darkness.
Throughout the play, Rose uses the technique character foil while contrasting juror 3 and juror 8 to demonstrate the message of the play to the audience. darkness. The archetype light usually suggests hope, renewal, or intellectual illumination. On the other hand, darkness implies the unknown, ignorance, or despair. As the jurors enter the New York City courtroom, darkness overtakes the room until light approaches. This could represent juror’s 3 ignorance towards the evidence that was being presented by juror 8. “Now listen to me! You pulled a real smart trick here, but you proved absolutely zero. Maybe there are ten knives like that, so what?” (Rose 13). As shown in this line, juror 3 continued to be oblivious after being explained the evidence and substantiated mistaken. Despair is present as juror 3 remembers his own son that ran off on him. “It’s not your boy. He’s somebody else” (Rose 72). Juror 3 brought his own personal family into the case. The defendant is not the same individual as the Juror’s son. It is unfair that the suspect’s verdict was judged on the juror’s individual life. As juror 8 shows his hope that the respondent could possibly be not guilty, the archetype light begins to be present. Juror 8 did not only demonstrate hope but as well as intellectual illumination. “No. I’m saying that it’s possible that the boy lost the knife and that someone else stabbed his father with a similar knife.
