4. After people’s brain completes the analysis of the music, people’s emotions and moods usually will change according to different types of music. When people listen to music, they usually respond to music, with the change of their emotions and moods. In addition, different music may give people different type of emotions. For example, music which is familiar to people usually gives people positive emotions. Pereira, Teixeira, Figueiredo, Xavier, Castro, et al. (2011) asserted that familiarity matters for what kind of moods will be generated when people are exposed to music. They designed controlled experiment with one group listening to familiar music and another listening to unfamiliar music (p.3). Their results show that when people enjoy the familiar music, several areas of network in brain are significantly more active than their normal status. These areas of brains network usually represents happiness, comfortableness and so on (p.8). Other scholars also give evidence to show this link between network and emotions. Moore (2013) conducted a research study about emotion regulation, a human internal process of keeping comfortable state of emotions. The author found that music can generate desired as well as undesired patterns in neural network. Desired pattern means positive moods and undesired pattern refers to unwanted moods. He found that desired patterns are usually found in people who listen to familiar music. When people listen to dissonance music, they are more likely to generate negative and undesired patterns in their brains. From the above evidence we can see that music do benefit people through better sleep quality. This is another clear physical benefit, and it comes from psychological aspect as well.
12. Music accompanies with us every day. It generates lots of effects on people, psychologically and physically. Physical effects count for a larger part since music invokes people’s brains first, then people’s moods and emotions will be changed. As a result, people will be more energetic, and then harvest better sports performances, better academic performance, and better sleep quality. In order to utilize these benefits, it is crucial for us to thoroughly understand where music’s effects happen and how they happen.
