Lowering the drinking age Lowering the drinking age to eighteen would cause many problems. The idea of lowering the drinking age should not be a suggestion considering the huge problems caused by having the legal drinking age as twenty- one. A few state laws allow underage drinking, as long as an adult is present. Many argue that making it illegal to drink under the age of twenty-one, has influenced teens to go against this law even more. This has increased the chance of teenage lives to became endangered. Lowering the drinking age would cause an increase in drunk driving, health problems, and violent behavior. Washington Accident Books states that twenty percent of the two thousand children that have been killed in fatal car accidents, were accidents caused by drivers “legally intoxicated”. This shows that even people of a legal age cannot handle drinking responsibly. If a twenty-one year old cannot handle the responsibility of drinking, what makes any rightly minded person assume an eighteen year old could possibly be more responsible? It is a common argument that eighteen years olds should have permission to drink if they are allowed to fight and die for our country in the Army. This people are failing to realize that it is necessary that we have sober and well developed soldiers. Yes, these young men and women are fighting and dying for our country, however, being intoxicated during a mission could be very dangerous due to the effect alcohol has on behavior. We lack knowledge of how big of an impact alcohol has on our health. It is obvious that illegal purchase and consuming of alcohol goes on at high school parties.
