On a daily basis, it is always best to learn something new because it expands your knowledge and encourages critical thinking. Before taking LIT 106 Intro to Film, I did not know anything about film but I learned a lot of interesting facts over the course. Some topics include the development of cinema, film introduced as a language, cinematography, film genres, the use of mise-en-scene, representations, etc. In order to help students visually understand the various concepts, we watched different types of film to explore the worlds of characters that we never experienced before. While film is portrayed as entertainment, they reflect the attitudes of people in reality.
The history of film analyzes the changes between the past and the present. In the beginning of the semester, students are introduced to how cameras evolved over time. It was fascinating to know inventors design creative techniques for their ideal camera because they are intellectual individuals that develop strong and useful products for people to use. There is always a setting, actors, props, costumes and other details in a scene because it shows what is happening to the characters of the story. Mise-en-scene refers to all the stuff in the scene, how it is framed throughout the film and supports the narrative. Without a setting, actors, props, costumes, etc. the story would be meaningless because it makes no sense. If you tell a story visually about a murder, viewers should see blood, guns, knives, victims, etc. For example, in the film Psycho (1960), the room Marion resides at home and the hotel shows how she is trapped. Also if you look at Norman’s office at the hotel, viewers should notice that there are a lot of objects that symbolizes his ulterior motive of watching her all the time.
