Bowling is one of the world’s oldest and most popular games. It is said that bowling dates all the way back to 3200 B.C. During the 1930s, Sir Flinders Petrie, a British anthropologist, found a collection of objects in a child's grave in Egypt that appeared to be used for a crude and embryonic form of bowling. The goal is usually to knock over the pins that are at the end of the lane. When all of the pins fall on the first throw/roll, this is considered a strike. On the second throw or roll, it is called a spare. There are many different variants of bowling. There is Nine pin bowling, ten pin, candlepin, duckpin, and 5 pin. Ten pin bowling is where there are 10 pens, five pin has 5, and nine pin has 9. Five pin is normally played in Canada.

The main differences between candlepin bowling and the major tenpin bowling style are that each player uses three balls per frame, rather than two, the balls are much smaller with each ball weighing as much as only one candlepin and without finger holes. The pins are also thinner (hence the name "candlepin"), therefore they are harder to knock down. Also, the pins that you do knock down will not be cleared off during your turn. Because of these differences, people think it is much more difficult to score during candlepin
