The role of the SNA involves assisting in the provision of the additional care needs identified in certain children with Special Educational Needs. These care needs are divided into two categories, Primary and Secondary.

Under Primary Care Needs an SNA may be required to assist a child who has difficulty feeding, may be required to administer medication and it may be necessary to help a child who has difficulties using the toilet unassisted. Where a child has mobility or spatial difficulties the SNA may be required to provide guidance to the pupil, operate hoists and lifting equipment aiding the movement and lifting of the child.
