Life of Pi Essay Topic 3 There are twelve steps to becoming a hero according to Joseph Campbell’s monomyth. The twelve steps are the ordinary world, the call to adventure, the refusal of the call, meeting the mentor, crossing the threshold, the tests, allies, and enemies, the approach to the inmost cave, the ordeal, the reward, the road back the resurrection and the return with the elixir (Bronzite). Pi goes through these 12 steps of becoming a hero in the Life of Pi. The ordinary world consists of what happens before the journey. This step allows one to learn about the character and allows the reader to connect to the character later on (Bronzite). Pi’s ordinary world is when the book talks about his life in India. They are the road back, the resurrection, and the return with the elixir. The road back is the opposite of the call to adventure. This occurs when the hero has to choose to continue the quest or do something else. The next stage is the resurrection. In the resurrection stage, the hero has to face death one last major time. In Pi’s story, Pi finding the island is the resurrection. His time on the island was several days long. Soon he realized that the island is carnivorous and he finds this out by there being teeth inside of the fruit that he finds, there being saltwater fish in a freshwater pond on the island, and there being no animals on part of this island. The reason this is the resurrection stage is because the island represents death and Pi’s desire to live a non lonely life and it is a major part of the story. This is best shown through the quote, “By the time morning came, my grim decision was taken. I preferred to set off and perish in search of my own kind than to live a lonely half-life of physical comfort and spiritual death on this murderous island(154). The return with the elixir is the final stage and contain the hero returning home with some sort of reward. This final reward is the proof of journey, change, and success. Pi’s return with the elixir is him making it back to land. His elixir is knowledge. He realized he couldn’t have done it without Richard Parker to look after and his religions.
