Surprisingly, even today, street art can still be perceived as vandalism. This misunderstood art form is a concept which is present in all of our daily life, acting as an inspiration to many aspiring artists and brightening up the dismal world we live in today, with the ongoing wars and refugees fleeing to safety in an attempt to escape their nightmare. To those on the opposing side, it should be emphasised that street art is not graffiti and graffiti is not street art. For ages now, strain has been lingering and bubbling under the surface between the graffiti writers and street artists. The majority of passers-by merge and confuse one with the other. Unquestionably, there are notable distinctions between them. Most people that carry out graffiti are not coached or shown how to and they are constructed mainly on words, usually names or foul language scribbled on the walls. It arisen for teenagers as a way to reveal themselves. Typically, it is observed as self-centred as they use “tags” as a way to build up their own status. Conversely, street artists are predominantly those that have been professionally taught- their paintings will hold immense thoughts and a symbolic (hidden) meaning behind it, sometimes political. The members of this underground subculture could be your next-door neighbor, your son or daughter, or the contractor repairing your roof, yet you would have no idea that they strive to “bomb” objects and surfaces found in everyday life. Art has been around ever since the ancient city of Pompeii. The people of Pompeii used graffiti as a way to display their cleverness; from poetry contests to playful recombinations of the letters that form Roman Numerals. In the early ‘70s, graffiti was used as a way for young teens to mark their territory. During that time, many people – especially in New York City – saw graffiti as vandalism and prohibited it. Even though graffiti has been misused in some occasions, as long as the purpose is not to deliberately mischievous or malicious destruction, graffiti is art.

Graffiti shows creativity and self expression in one of the best ways. Typically graffiti artists display their artistic talent on train cars, buildings, and public/private properties. The vibrancy of the colors used draws in people nearby to look at the astounding creativity. Although this is true for a shocking amount of people, the same can’t be said for the owners of the properties. This illicit art has a negative effect on the owners. This is also true for some people who just happen to walk by this art, even policemen or businessmen who think this beautiful self expression is an unacceptable eyesore. The artists who have been caught have been penalized and shamed for their creativity. Their mentality has been destroyed and they have been labeled as public nuisances. The Graffiti community is, although they will not admit, a bunch of aesthetic filled souls. Everyone gathers recognition in this community. “Graffiti isn't something a normal person does, I have been through a lot of situations just cus I do what I do,” my subject explains. The identity of a graffiti artist is hardly ever known, but the style of the art is. They can be identified by the way they express themselves. It can be broad and can be shown in many different forms. The forms can range from a simple tag of identity, an expression of protest and politics, to an alluring scene of art work. Within the last few years, graffiti has been deemed an acceptable and tasteful genre of art. Long gone are the days where the spray can belonged exclusively to the local delinquent. From the past to present, there has been a shift in how street art is recognized by the general public and the government. The majority of people if asked, would not be able make any distinction between street art and graffiti art. Though in reality they are actually quite different; Graffiti writing and street art are often confused with one another. They both display their work out in the open instead of in a gallery.
