Self respect is often associated with words and phrases such as, knowing your worth, confidence, and self love. Google defines self respect as, “Pride and confidence in oneself.” Today’s society takes the true meaning of self respect, chews it up and spits it out. Self respect is one of the hardest things to have and keep in today's world. People are set to incredibly high standards that are nearly impossible to reach. One's self respect is measured by how many followers you have on social media, or how many likes you got on your latest profile picture. Though self respect is hard to attain in today's world, those who do have it, flaunt it. For example, Karter Dunham will often say that he has self respect. Karter is a close friend of mine who I grew up with, you could say that he is wealthier than average. Karter himself will often say that he is a self absorbed, egotistical narcissist. However if one were to call him arrogant, he would become extremely offended and argue that he is not a narcissist. He would in fact say that he has a great amount of self respect, he is using that word to justify his selfishness. Someone who he himself says that he is a narcissist will use the words self-respect as an excuse to justify his selfish persona. When asked what he believes he is on a scale of one to ten, Karter confidently replied with, “Hmm thirty-two.” Only an extremely self absorbed person would reply with something of that sort. Most other people would have modestly laughed and brushed the question off. An obvious example of this in today’s world is how people measure the amount of self respect they have for themselves by the amount of followers they have on social media or the amount of likes they get on each and one of their posts. A close friend of mine, Nayela Garay, has a substantial amount of followers on instagram. You could say that she gets a respectable amount of likes on her posts, whether the post be on, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or even snapchat. Nayela does not know nearly half the people that like and follow her on every one of the social media outlets that she has. Yet they still are willing to like and encourage her through the act of two simple taps, maybe even one, depending on what social media outlet you are on. Nayela believes she is fairly good in the department of looks. She often says that she has a great amount of self respect. This is a result of the amount of likes and followers she has on social media. If one were to get into a fight with Nayela, she would tell the person to get some self respect. In today’s world, self respect is used as an insult. Many of the students at worland high school will say, “Get some self respect” to a person who has crossed or betrayed them. This lack of respect comes forwards in ways of permission asking, and explaining how something works instead of letting the person learn on their own (Lee, 6-7). She has shown that there are many ways that other cultures have never had to deal with this social problem unlike the West has. Throughout her chapter she explains how the fundamental value in society should be the respect for the individual. This respect is shown through themes such as child rearing, leadership, and work. The basic resolution is to have respect for individual autonomy and therefore have respect for the individual in itself. She states, we can learn from all these other cultures that have individual integrity/autonomy as important parts within their cultures. Proper respect for others begins by a person respecting their self. Respect is developed by expressing honor, leadership, value, and trust in a person. If everyone respects everyone someday, the world will become a seventh heaven. It is important to be respectful for safety, to abide by the law, because children are influenced by their elders’ actions, and because God says so. Motivation from peers can help a person realize there is always room to improve the level of respect a person exhibits. Respect was, is, and always will be a positive attribute for everyone to strive for in their lives.

When looking at the United States Presidents, we picture the president to embody great leadership skill, who could show strong communication skill, and be in a position to display power. When people elected the president, there are certain quality traits and skill that the president need to display. Some people will view the president as grandiose narcissism, while others may have a different perspective of the president. People who are narcissist, believe their selves to become more important than others. Narcissist people are also overconfident of their decision making, and have difficulty at learning from their mistake (Watts, Lilienfeld, Smith, Miller, Campbell, Waldman, Rubenzer, & Faschingbauer, 2013). There are different types of characteristics of narcissism: vulnerable and grandiose. Vulnerable narcissistic people, who are become anxious when they are not regarded as royalty. People who are vulnerable narcissism shows coming back and forward between feelings superiority and inferiority (Rohmann, Neumann, Herner, & Bierhoff, 2012). While grandiose narcissistic people are types to be viewed as leaders, however narcissistic people are overconfidence and put their needs before others.
Vanity can be described as covetous and envious. Regularly, I see the skeptical side of a person more than the forthright side of a person. For instance, lots of people at Foster High School have little self-confidence and are only worried about different ways to impress their peers or draw attention toward themselves in order to feel as if they fit in with the rest of their peers. People with internal conflicts as these often lie and cover up certain aspects of their lives. Personally, I have witnessed this within my own family. Many of my family members express this through something I call a “status symbol” meaning they want to be so much everyone else. They would go and buy a Mercedes-Benz, just to show they can be like everybody else, even though they are struggling with the monthly payments. Even more, if we would go back to middle school you would see kids in neon clothes, high socks, and snapback. Now, however, teens are so wrapped up in their friends they need all the new name brand clothes, such as Polo, True Religion, and Nike. Self-esteem involves evaluations of self-worth. People with high self-esteem tend to think well of others and expect to be accepted them.
Self-respect is probably the most important value for a person. It is said that in order to earn the respect of others, a person needs to learn to treat oneself with respect. I think that self-respect has a lot to do with one’s self-esteem. Self-esteem is an opinion of one’s own worth. For example, a girl that sleeps around will probably earn the reputation of a slut or a tramp. In reality, she is coping with the stresses of a low self-esteem.
As there is a general rise in narcissism over time, the next pressing question is what factors drive these trends. Children develop cognitive processes to self-evaluate their actions and concept from the perception of others (Harter, 1999), but it is when these processes become maladaptive and the child develops excessive degrees of value of worth that narcissism develops (Thomaes, Brummelman, Reijntjes, & Bushman, 2013). My culture respects the people and the things that deserve it, but with that said, we also don’t give respect to the people who don’t deserve it. We don’t just respect anyone or anything neither, they have to earn that valuable thing that most people don’t have nor give anymore. This is probably one of the biggest differences between my culture and my society because in my society people don’t know the first thing about respect. The way i see it is that it really is a shame of how my society and these people that live in it can’t show even a little bit of respect for someone or something, big or small. Respect is one of the dying characteristics in this world and my culture has the last of it.
The difference between “pride” and “self-respect” is not in class as many believe but in quantity. While the word “proud” may be perceived as arrogant or conceited, “self respect” does the modification of the person under discussion. Self-respect can be thus referred to as the sophisticated form of one’s ego or pride. A person with self-respect is not necessarily egoistic as he or she may lead you to believe but is full of assertiveness, confidence and self-efficacy. One who carries pride is an illusion of superiority. Self-respect can be classified as the “dignity” of a person. One with self-respect would not show inferiority but at times of need would seek help and his ego would not be a barrier to doing so.

Respect is showing love, when you love someone you protect them from hurt. It gives comfort to the heart to be with someone who respects you. I gained confidence through being faithful to my marriage and putting my focus on one family. A husband and wife should build each other up, not tear each other down. I have come to believe and stand by the word of God in my marriage and not a day goes by that I do not appreciate my children and especially my wife for treating me as a man I have grown to be.
Loving yourself is the key to a happy life. When you love all that you are, unconditionally, life reflects that back to you. When you learn to love yourself, fully, you create a happy, loving environment to flourish in. When we lose sight of what’s most important—loving self—we lose sight of our goals and dreams and being happy and healthy. Ultimately, to live a fulfilling life, first and foremost, requires that you love all that you are and trust that life loves you in return.
