History of Ballet

Ballet, a form of dance has been around for many years and did not start in America. Ballet has made its mark around the globe and many have and still are enjoying the art and entertainment that the ballet brings. Ballet is known as being the “core” of the other forms of dance as in modern, contemporary and even hip hop. People enjoy the form of dance on an everyday basis at family functions, parties and even just being home alone and many do not know that the dances they particularly like all originated from ballet. The Classical Period which happened in the late 1700’s became one the most evolutionary times in ballets history. The Classical Period is where performance and expression became extremely important. With ballet this period is where the use of storytelling became one of the main focuses for the dancer’s performances. The use of their emotions and the character they portrayed were more important than the use of the costumes. The “father of classical ballet” was known as Marius Petipa. Petipa was born in French but he came to Russia to create in the ballet. In the early 1800’s came the Pre-Romantic Period which was short but needed because of Marie Taglioni. “Normally the roles taken on by women were a stereotypical Romantic heroine. These women would glide along the stage like a fairy. They were immaculate and the epitome of virtue. Their wholesomeness would lead good to always prevail over evil” (Cennarium). This period was called the Romantic period. It was called the Romantic Period because of the elegancy and how the ballet productions were refined. This era is when the tutu came about, long elegant skirts. During the late 1800’s the Russian Classic came about. This time is where the productions for two came along which were called the “pas de deux”. With this time period some classic ballet pieces came about The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. Those dances are still performed and loved today with the same choreography as when first produced. Russia became a big home to the art of ballet. Russia birthed some of the greatest and influential artist. Serge Diaghilev was a choreographer and dancer who was very well known for his love of ballet. In the 1900’s Diaghilev moved to Paris to share his love and wonderful ideas he had for ballet. With Diaghilev being a ballet innovator, he connected with a man name Michel Fokine. Having Diaghilev and Fokine together they gave ballet a new outlook and began the modern era. This movement was called the Ballets
