From being just the fourth of nine children of poor Italian immigrants to the most merciless mob leader, Alphonse “Scarface” Capone worked his way to the top and ruled as one of the most notorious gangsters to ever live. Al Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York where his parents settled after immigrating from Italy. Just after dropping out of school, during the seventh grade because of a fight he had with his teacher, Capone started his journey to becoming the infamous mob leader he was. At such a young age, he was already out in the streets, completing dangerous tasks given to him by the gang leaders at the time made him become a ruthless person. It was described as “three jagged marks that remained pale and hairless--on his left cheek” (“Al Capone”, Outlaws). Although he wasn't a fond of the nickname that was given to him after that fight, Scarface, people thought it made him seem even more ruthless. He didn’t care who it was that got in his way, he ended them. “Capone’s refused to tolerate betrayal, especially among his own men, was legendary” (“Al Capone”, Outlaws). Capone had found out that three of his men were plotting against them and so he threw a banquet supposedly honoring them for being his best gunmen. Later in the night towards the end of the banquet, he beat his men to death in front of all the guests. That was legendary because it was a merciless action and it shocked everyone. Al Capone was capable of removing anything and anyone that got in his way. “Head of the cruelest cutthroats in American history, he inspired gang wars in which more than 300 men died by the knife, the shotgun, the tommy gun and the pineapple” (“How Prohibition”). The pineapple is another word for a grenade used in World War I.
