Benedict Arnold, a name known throughout America as a name that means traitor. Everyone knows he betrayed his country, but not many know exactly why. No one betrays someone or something without a reason and this is the same with Benedict Arnold. In this paper I’m going to discuss his life and events leading up to his betrayal and his untimely death. This is the story of Benedict Arnold, the revolutionary traitor.

Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut to Benedict Arnold III and Hannah Waterman King Arnold. His father married Hannah, a wealthy widow in November 1733. He was one of only two of his mother’s eleven children to survive. Hannah’s late husband, Absalom King, was a well-to-do merchant. Benedict

He selected Arnold to lead troops through a wilderness route for the second part of the Quebec campaign. This mission was delayed from the start by terrain and weather, but Arnold got most of his troops through. Unfortunately, in their delay the city had been reinforced. He could not wait had had to attack on December 31, 1775 , since many of his men’s enlistments expired on New Year’s day. In the spring of 1778 Washington appointed Arnold the commander of the city of Philadelphia. While in this post Arnold met Peggy Shippen, who was the daughter of a loyalist sympathizer. Peggy and Arnold married on April 8,1779. This marriage greatly improved his social status, however, he did not have the money to finance the lifestyle to go along with it.     During the War for American Independence, 78 men were commissioned as general officers into the Continental Army by the Continental Congress. Many of these generals commanded troops with differing levels of competence and success. George Washington is typically seen as most important general, however throughout the war a number of his subordinates were able to distinguish themselves amongst their peers. One such general was Nathanael Greene. He would become known for his successful southern campaign, during which, he loosened British control of the South and helped lead the war to its climax at Yorktown. Throughout the war, he was involved in a number high profile battles where he built a reputation of being an elite strategist who also understood unconventional warfare, logistics, and the importance of military-civil affairs and had a natural political/social acumen.     In 1775, Benedict Arnold had taken his first victory-Fort Ticonderoga. The Battle of the fort occured on May 10, 1775. Arnold and four-hundred soldiers stood opposite of the fort on Lake Champlain and waited for the scouting units to return (CIA). When they had returned, they told Benedict that the fort had only housed fourty-nine British soldiers, a megar amount compared to Benedict's. With the fort under the patriots control, the army gained a hundred cannons that the army despreately needed (fourty-three of which were transported and used by General Knox against the British at Boston) and a passage from New York into Canada( History Ticonderoga)which led Benedict to his next military excersion.
