“The inner stage seems all set for ‘entrance into life,’ except that life must first be school life, whether school is field or jungle or classroom” (Erikson, 1985). Erik Erikson’s research focused on psychosocial stages, and in this paper, I will focus on the fourth stage called Industry vs. Inferiority; also known as the competence or school age stage. This essay will outline Erik Erikson’s fourth stage as well as give a fieldwork example of this theory in use. Through Erik Erikson’s research he greatly believed that people develop through establishing trust and an identity within society.
During the Industry vs. Inferiority stage, a child begins to readily learn in school and their teacher becomes an important aspect in their life. A child will now start to look for positive praise if they complete an assignment and begin to look toward their peers for reassurance. The fourth stage also focuses on a child learning to balance that some failure is okay because a child needs to establish some modesty. The failure part, is similar to trial and error, and in the end the child, or we hope so, will gain competence for the skill. Children are learning how to read, write, do mathematics, and explore different realms of education. It is important for them to have strong teachers to introduce them to new skills, and teach them how to read, write, and do math. Within this stage, the child is exposed to lots of new skill sets that are vital for their development. Their parents, teachers and now peers play a vibrant role in this part of a child’s progress.

...om you will see children engaged in learning and wanting more. When parents create trust and allow their child to find independence is when a child really begins to find hope and blossom. I will leave you with this famous quote by Erikson, “Hope is both the earliest and the most indispensable virtue inherent in the state of being alive. If life is to be sustained hope must remain, even where confidence is wounded, trust impaired.” The feeling of hope and seeing a child’s eyes light up when they have hope is a beautiful picture, and one I hold close to my heart. Every child in this world should have a sense of hope because it truly does keep up moving and wanting to be the best that we can be. Every school year I finish my talk with my students with the phrase, you can fall down but you have to have the hope that you can get back up again, because I know you can!
