1. Introduction
The era of social media was first started in 1999. The origin itself was named UseNet, created in 1979 where people were allowed to post messages to the public. Social media can be defined as a group of internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0; it also allows the creation and exchange of User Generated Content (UGC). On the other hand, crowdsourcing is said to coexist with social media. Crowdsourcing is best defined as the practice of gathering information, idea, or any content from a large group of people, often without any compensation (prescientdigital.com 2014). Thus, it cannot be denied the fact that social media correlate with crowdsourcing and therefore social media can be used as a media to crowdsource information. This research paper aims to identify the origin of social media and crowdsourcing, the use of social media, the relation between social media and crowdsourcing, and discuss some of the biggest collaborative projects that exist because of social media.

2.1 Definition of Social Media
Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) stated that Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis were the first ones whom created the first system that allows people to post public messages in 1979. The worldwide discussion system was named Usenet by then. However, the era of social media only started about 20 years later. Bruce and Susan Abelson developed “Open Diary” at that time and were used to gather online diary writers into one community. At the same time, the term “weblog” was used until one blogger jokingly transformed the noun “weblog” into the sentence “we blog”. High-speed Internet access raised the popularity of the concept which later social networking sites we...

...o problems, as Mau (cited in Brabham 2008) stated the fact that problem solving is no longer a matter of one’s ability to solve the problem; solutions are rather developed and distributed publicly. An example of crowdsourcing would be a business posting their company online and a group of people offer their solutions for the company and the winning idea will be given reward. Thus, it is beneficial for the company as crowdsourcing gathers mass ideas or solutions that might help them when facing problems. However, it is important to note that the solutions will become the property of the company, thus it is argued that crowdsourcing is actually an open-source practice.

Crowdsourcing is a term coined in 2006 by a magazine editor named Jeff Howe. Howe felt crowdsourcing was similar to outsourcing just on a much larger scale. Companies gather hundreds to thousands of people via the internet to perform jobs or tasks using their ideas and skills and then the companies would take these ideas and use them. However, this concept of crowdsourcing has been around long before the internet. For century’s companies such as Pillsbury, with their Bake Off contest that started in 1949 and other well-known companies have used the concept behind crowdsourcing to make successful business decisions as well as great paid off in the end. Although the internet has enabled crowdsourcing to become a more powerful tool for companies

Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms have become one of the central activities in human affairs. Used by people around the world promoting communication, social media gives scope to everyone to exhibit their ideas and thoughts. The plethora of social platforms is a revolutionary invention that is changing the way of how people moderate and communicate with others in their daily lives. Although many people admire this revolutionary concept, it can be argued that it has a negative impact on society. Extensive usage of social media can cause addiction, affecting productivity, and also reduce the level of human interaction, which in turn leads to isolation. Social media is correlated to many of the issues that revolve feminism and mental illness through anthropology, sociology and psychology.
Social media and networking are two of the greatest ways to influence the views and beliefs of a society. Being that it is a prime communication center for millions of people worldwide, the power of social media is incredible. In January of 2011,...
I have not gone two days without social media for the last ten years. Last week, however, I finally disconnected from everything except phone calls for 36 hours. It was an out of body experience; I was on an emotional roller coaster of perpetual emptiness and anxiety mixed with a sublime relaxation I had only felt before when juice fasting. After the initial shock and habitual glances at a blank phone, I generally was calm and at peace. Through the experience, I gained a new perspective on mobile phones and I now see why many people favor the dystopian view of social media usage. While I once thought that people just loved to be cynical, I see how technology is drastically warping our lives and changing human interaction. By talking face-to-face
With all the advancements in technology and use of the Internet, it has influenced the power and pitfalls of crowdsourcing, seen in Erickson’s “Crowd-Powered: Why Doritos Lets Fans Make Its Super Bowl Ads” and Power’s “Crime solving by crowdsourcing: On Internet, thousands sift through photos, trying to identify bomb suspects”, through gaining a numerous amount of inexpensive ideas really quickly, but also questioning the quality and reliability of crowdsourcing results. Crowdsourcing is a great communication tool to use and has great benefits to business and other individuals utilizing crowdsourcing, as well as the
With the way the world is now it should be no surprise to anyone that social media has very literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world and even see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives.”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. This can be through discussion, photos, video and audio
People tend to tell stories and notify others about the life events that is happening in someone’s life. Storytelling is instinctive to human whether it is genuine or unreal, the way people communicate or share these stories with others has changed over time and through time, there was then a shift to words formed into narratives (Mendoza, 2015). Mendoza (2015) also emphasized that due to the use of advancing technologies such as the printing press, the camera and the internet and its social media platforms, the way people tell others stories and keep themselves informed about current topics and make them relate to the story has transformed to a more embracing experience. Advent technology has allowed humans to develop and use all ways of
Just as anything else, social networks were not born in a day, it slowly developed into what is known in today’s society. In the 70’s, Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs) and Usernets were prime communication. BBS is considered the first site that allowed internet users to interact with each other. However, users would have to use a dial-up connection and only one at a time could access the BBS. While Usernets were slightly different. This was a system that allowed users to post articles to newsgroups. Into the 80’s Online Services were created, such as CompuServe, Prodigy and the well-known AOL. These sites simply made the internet “universally accessible in the United States.” Following online services in the late 80’s came Instant Messaging and Chat systems such as Internet Relay Chat, which allowed for sharing links and files. ICQ was also booming around this time, its use was for instant messaging and was “partly” responsible for avatars, emoticons and abbreviations such as LOL and BRB. In 1997 the “first modern social network” Six Degrees was created. This site allowed users to build profiles, and become “friends” with other users. Following Six Degrees were sites such as; BlackPlanet, LiveJournal. World of Warcraft, Friendster, Hi5, LinkedIn, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Ins...
The modern blog evolved from the online diary, where people would keep a running account of their personal lives. Most such writers called themselves diarists, journalists, or journalers. A few called themselves "escribitionists". The Open Pages webring included members of the online-journal community. Justin Hall, who began eleven years of personal blogging in 1994 while a student at Swarthmore College, is generally recognized as one of the earliest bloggers,[5] as is Jerry Pournelle.[citation needed] Dave Winer's Scripting News is also credited with being one of the oldest and longest running weblogs[6] [7]. Another early blog was Wearable Wireless Webcam, an online shared diary of a person's personal life combining text, video, and pictures transmitted live from a wearable computer and EyeTap device to a web site in 1994. This practice of semi-automated blogging with live video together with text was referred to as sousveillance, and such journals were also used as evidence in legal matters.
The impact of Social Media on Society Technology has come a long way from its existence till today. In today’s modern world, people are surrounded by technology everywhere. In the present, people are surrounded by disrupting technologies every day. Today, innovators are always creating new technologies that will make an impact on the daily lives of millions. Technology has made the lives of many people easier.
Crowdsourcing for business solutions are very convenient for product improvement. The word crowdsourcing was generated by Jeff Howe in 2006, in an article which labeled a new way of finding people who are prepared to support or work on development. People with enough time can lend a lot of available manpower for company in decision making. Manual responsibilities such as labeling massive amounts of pictures, instead of reaching out to to a huge company, it’s more likely and inexpensive to use a crowdsourcing market like Amazon. The term crowdsourcing has been in our society for years to help situations and to also help products grow. Video game demo’s offers are a method of crowdsourcing, where a video game developer releases a demo version of the game to the public for testing. These actions have been used by the software industry for years, where certain video games are reviewed by crowdsourcing businesses; however others are tested by citizens. Crowdsourcing is often used for translation purposes. For example, companies like Facebook has been using crowdsourcing to translate its website into more compatible languages since 2008 for the entire world. Websites such as Wikipedia can be also considered as crowdsourcing as well: it’s an encyclopedia written by folks from different parts of world, like experts. Corporations these days do not only employ Research and Development (R&D) teams, they may list the glitches they’re fixing to the public as a way to reach out to those out there that can maybe help. Certain establishments even offer huge rewards for solving any kind issues on crowdsourcing site like InnoCentive.
Social Media is defined by Merriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (Merriam-Webster), and for many Americans is a method of social interaction that is used often on a daily basis. It has been determined that one in five people use social media at least once a day and that 19% of Americans between the age of 15 and 54 are on sites like Facebook and Twitter(). It’s no longer common place to send handwritten letters or birthday cards, now writing on a wall, sending a tweet or snapping a picture is accepted. Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either that. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited.
Social media is a controversy topic in today’s society. Some people think that social media destroys human interaction and real life human relationships. While others think that social media is a bless to humanity. Social media makes human interaction much more convenient and much faster than real life human interaction, it makes globalization a reality, it gives a chance for introverted people to express themselves, and it also benefit develop international relationships whether its business or social.
