Over the past few years, climate change, plastic pollution, acid rain, and the interlinked nature of these challenges have brought much concern of many researchers and environmentalists. In a post-modern society, we have created a lot of environmental issues with global impacts because our environment has begun to be treated as an unlimited field full of abundant resources for groups and organizations with the power and skills to acquire them. Though many news and social media often underline the consequences of disturbing ecosystem and the significances of respecting the environment, but as more people cluster together in large metropolitan areas today, there are fewer opportunities for them to explore the city environment. Consequently, people do not have enough environmental awareness, and this could make the environmental challenges become even harder to cope with in the future. Hence, it is extremely vital to have environment education since it can help people to become environmental literate citizens.
“Sustainability literacy includes a very broad set of knowledge and skills, including the understandings of the symbiotic relationships between environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainable development” (Kokkarinen and Cotgrave, 2013, p. 56) student experiences. A sustainability literate person must have the skills and knowledge to assess and make decisions by taking environmental, social and economic dimensions into account simultaneously rather than separately (Lugg, 2007, p. 98). In order to help individuals build their sustainability literacy efficiently, it is important for schools and the government to instill the ideas of sustainability into people’s mind.

Policy should create more opportunities for Canadian educational institutions to freely exchange their ideas about sustainability and to draw lessons from each other.
Educating more people with high sustainability literacy is extremely necessary to save our chaotic environment today, and we can improve the sustainability literacy level of people by promoting sustainability in not only educational institutions, but also policy. Only if we make changes to the fundamental systems of our schools and government, then we can assert that we will have a better environment for our future generalizations.
