Environmental Degradation: Primitive Organisms vs Modern Day Marine Life

1006 Words3 Pages

The industrialized world we live in today is overdosing our oceans in nutrients like nitrogen, carbon, iron, and phosphorus compounds. These compounds come out of smokestacks, washes into the oceans from fertilized cropland, and seep out of septic tanks and sewer pipes. This process causes the tiny marine plants to run riot, then die and drift to the bottom of the ocean. Afterwards the bacteria takes over, and in a process of breaking down the plant matter, sucks all the oxygen out of the water, leaving little, or none for other marine life, so the only marine life that can survive are the primitive organisms that evolved long ago in an ocean with no oxygen, and so they require little to survive (jacquet). If we do not take action all modern day marine life will die off and primitive organisms will once again, rule our oceans.

Industrialization is a major contributor to the more evolved marine organisms dying off. From over fishing to over dosing our oceans in nutrients, it seems we’re trying to kill off all evolved marine life in our seas.

Overfishing is a huge factor we must consider. Over fishing occurs when marine species are caught faster than they can reproduce. It seems like now days it’s happening more and more

to a variety of species. According to Pavan Sukdev a United Nations Environment Programmer “we are in the situation where forty years down the line we, effectively, are out of fish”. This is not good news for the one in five people that depend on fish as the primary source of protein (Food and Agriculture Organization). Overfishing has become such a threat to our oceans that, the save our oceans foundation has named it number one out of the five biggest threats to our oceans.

...erfishing, to over dosing are oceans in nutrients we are killing more evolved

species of marine life. With these species out of the way for competing for food and shelter, the more primitive organisms, that are not as affected by things like overfishing and too many nutrients in our ocean, are left with an abundance of resources, which is causing them to abundance in population. We have seen this across the globe and the evidence is irrefutable, and the condition of our oceans will only continue to get worse, if we don’t take action!
