People all around the world use cars and trucks to transport themselves and their goods from place to place, so analyzing the auto industry gives insight into hundreds of millions consumers worldwide. Since there are cars in nearly every country, the supply and demand of automobiles greatly increases each year, as people want a faster, more convenient way of travelling. At the same time, emissions from automobiles add to the growing pollution in the environment, which also affects people around the world. Since environmental change and automobile use are directly linked, the environment and climate change, as well as ideas to pursue new regulations, have a strong impact on the auto industry.
Based on the case analysis of the auto industry (Highfill, David, et al., 2004), there are many ways in which the auto industry has changed in recent years. Regulations are not just a recent development: since 1960, according to Highfill, regulations from the government affected the industry. Many of these changes are for safety and environmental reasons, and these new regulations still occur today. Since so many people want to buy large vehicles in order to travel, and the population of the world keeps increasing, every country has its own demand for vehicles. Some places require different types of cars than others: smaller cars are popular in South Korea, while big vehicles are common in the USA. In order to combat this trend of buying large cars, some cities have started banning types of cars: according to Highfill, the city of Paris wants to ban SUVs from inside the city limits, because they take up too much space and use too much fuel. Andrew Simms, a policy director and head of the Climate Change Program for the New Economics Foundation in England, presents his argument about the impact SUV’s have on our roadways, and the air we breathe. “Would You Buy a Car That Looked like This? “. The title alone gives great insight on what the article is going to be about, (vehicles). “They clog the streets and litter the pages of weekend colour *supplements. Sport utility vehicles or SUV’s have become badges of middle class aspiration” (Simms 542). Simms opening statement not only gives his opinion on how SUV’s are the new trend, but he also paints a picture of what we see every day driving down our roadways. Simms also compares the tobacco industry’s gap between image and reality to that of SUV’s; stating that the cause and consequences of climate change resemble smoking and cancer. Simms comparison between SUV’s and cigarettes shows how dangerous he believes SUV’s are.
Increasing environmental awareness, coupled with a responsible American government and improved technology, have all contributed to the comeback of low-and zero-emissions vehicles in the US. It remains to be seen whether the automakers and oil companies will once again work to halt this progress, or embrace it as the technology of a more responsible future.
Americas love affair with the automobile has caused more than a few problems for our environment. Air pollution may well be the number one problem, but there is others. The automobile making process has created a domino effect in which it distorts the natural stage of the environment. For instance, motorized vehicles consume fossil resources; they pollute air, water and lands. Today, people use their own personal vehicles to travel more than ever before. Personal transportation is no longer considered a luxury; it is now considered a necessity. The number of cars in the United States has been growing steadily since the 1970s. The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
It seems like more and more people are purchasing electric cars everyday, infact, it is very likely that you yourself have or know someone who has an electric vehicle. When asked why these people decided to make the purchase, the response would more than likely be that they wanted a car that was better for the environment. However, various research studies have proven that electric vehicles are not that much better for the environment, in fact they worsen the environment. For example, according to a new study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, electric vehicles are worse for the environment per mile than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles (Russel, J. 2015). Another factor that harms our environment is the use of coal, of which electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas. That is due to the pollution made in generating the electricity, according to a separate study published in December by the Carnegie Institution for Science (Zolfagharifard, E. 2015).
Climate change in automotive industry represent both threat and opportunity in the business. It gives opportunity for the car makers to develop a new technology that is more environmental friendly, which can reduce the amount of green house gas emission. It also gives the carmakers to create a more energy efficient in their operations, which can cut the unnecessary production costs.
