In the postwar period the passengers and cargo air traffic worldwide has grown rapidly. The plane has stopped for a long time to be a luxury or a prohibitive mean of transportation, being preferred for the rapidity of transport, the smooth organization and running of traffic, increased comfort and safety. The plane remains today the most effective and most used means of transport over long and very long distances. Effective only if we think about speed, because if we think in terms of ecological issues, air transport is a very important source of pollution contributing to ozone depletion and global warming.
On average, every five years a new generation of aircrafts has emerged with a double transport capacity than the one of the previous generation. Today, a Boeing 747 aircraft type can carry 490 passengers and 115 tons of cargo. For cargo, there are used both mixed planes but also specialized aircrafts dedicated for specific types of goods.
In the last decade, the main trend is represented by the use of specialized planes, which generated important changes in the technologies embedded in the aircrafts. Achievements in creating new materials, lighter and more durable, the introduction of improved production processes and the technology of electronic computing have enabled a strong development of the world’s aircraft fleets. All these technological achievements have enabled not just the increase of the transport capacity, but also of the flight autonomy and speed.
Nowadays, after all these developments, there is an increased need to transform the aircrafts into green machines.

In today’s world, the use of airplanes in wars or in everyday life has become a part of how we live as human beings. Removing the air forces of the world is like taking a step back in time when wars were only fought on land or sea. WWI began only eleven short years after the Wright brothers achieved powered flight in 19031 and yet aircrafts were being used for surveillance and eventually combat purposes. It is understood that these aircrafts were primitive, but they laid down the foundation for what we know today as fighter jets. The Fokker Eindecker “revolutionized air combat by successfully employing a synchronized forward -firing machine gun mounted on the engine cowling”2. Because this airplane became the first to successfully use a synchronized machine gun, it allowed its pilots to become the first aerial combat tactitions3.
In this paper, I would like to discuss on the video, “21st century jet.” This video is about the launching and testing of the airplane by the Boeing company, 777.The 777 family is designed to fill the size gap between the 767 and 747.The head of the 777 project is Allen Millaley, who promised to do many things which are impossible, produced the plane which is more reliable than any other plane in the aviation history. The first large passenger jet designed completely by computer, the 777 is more complex and innovative than any other airliner ever built.

Since the time of the World Wars and the Wright brothers, aviation has become a huge part of global society. The Orville and Wilbur Wright’s names will forever be remembered into United States history as the first men who were the first to fully realized human flight. Their successful invention of a working, powered airplane brought about whole new ways of wars, including new strategies for both offense and defense. Many technological advances might not have occurred without the need for new weapons and systems for airplanes. Travel and commerce would be much slower without the usage of airplanes. Orville and Wilbur have made a lasting impact on the world with their invention of a working, human-controlled, powered airplane; who knows what the world would be without it.
“Aviation is proof that given, the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible” (Brainyquote.com). Eddie Rickenbacker describes the ability of the human mind to achieve the impossible by creating the means to fly. This statement epitomizes David O. Swain –Aerospace Engineer and former Senior Vice President of Boeing- and the contributions to technology, aviation, and the world he helped provide. Without the revolutionary technology he was a part of today’s military would not be the same.
In the early 1920’s, new technology was being developed to enable aircraft to fly higher and faster. This early development of aircraft technology was hindered by the depression until World War II pulled the United States out of economic hardship. Jet engine design has been critical in keeping aircraft in line with other countries’ developing technology. All over the world, countries were racing to be the first with a jet engine powered aircraft.
The A-380 is becoming more popular as airlines look for ways to move the maximum amount of passengers for the least money (Stafford, 2006). The A380 is made in passenger or freight versions. The A380-800 is the largest passenger plane in the world. When passenger areas are divided into three classes, the A380 can seat 550 passengers. When the entire plane is designated economy class, it can seat 853 people. There is 50% more cabin floor space than the Boeing 747 because the A380s upper deck goes the entire length of the fuselage (“Airbus a380 airfield,”2011). In 2010 there were already over 30 in use and more are expected in the near future (Young & Wells, 2011, p. 473). Due to the size and weight of the aircraft, airports will have to make some major renovations, improvements and expansions to accommodate them.
The air transportation system is one of the most vital means of transportation in the world
The Boeing 737 is one of the most popular aircraft ever produced. Over 7700 in all variants have been produced, with an additional 11,275 aircraft on order. This makes the 737 the most popular jetliner to date. The 737 has a wide variety of uses, and still remains extremely popular and under high demand. Because it is such a widely mass produced aircraft, it is also a target for constant aerodynamic improvements. Boeing has looked at everything from the design of the anti-collision lights, to the reduction of small gaps in the airfoil. This has created an aircraft that is extremely aerodynamic and efficient at any task it performs.
Aviation has a huge environmental impact to the environment and society, the aircraft engines releases a noise that affects human life and the particulates and gases that are released from the aircraft engines contribute to climate change and increases the global warming. Despite the emission reductions from cars and more fuel-efficient and less polluting turbofan and turboprop engines, the rapid growth of air transportation in the recent years contributes to an increase in total pollution attributable to aviation. In the European Union, and increased greenhouse gas emissions from aviation increased by 87% between 1990 and 2006. Like any other form of public mass transportation that relies on resources that are extracted from the planet for e.g. Oil, and the airline cannot be considered sustainable in the long-term too. Because of the limited resources in which the Aviation relies on, it is more realistic to think how to improve the sustainability of the air transportation rather than achieving a sustainable development. Demand for air transport is growing constantly and, if this demand is to be met with all the benefits associated, the community or society must also accept the costs like; (Pollution, Aircraft noise, Environment change, risk, and resources consumption, etc.).
Aviation industry deals with more than thousands of people and also spending millions of funds in order to meet the requirements, satisfy the necessities of people and to produce state-of-the-art aircraft. With its objective it is significant to consider the hazards involved and bring out an output with the least extent and under control risks to prevent any loss in terms of life and even profit.
Air travel has grown in the past decade. Travel grew strongly for both leisure and business purposes. India will have nearly 800 to 1000 airplanes by 2023, it was estimated by Airbus. In spite of growth between 30 to 50 per cent in Indian aviation industry, losses of approximately 2200 crore is estimated for the current year.
The future of passenger aircraft and their manufactures has an amazing outlook. Every year the brightest minds in aviation compile the greatest technological advances towards creating the safest and most economical aircraft on the planet. No detail is over looked, and the bottom dollar is the all controlling factor. From private aircraft to public aircraft, space exploration and beyond, the future is bright for the passenger aircraft market, and everyone who purchases air travel should be excited to see how industry unfolds.
