Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Abstract
ERP systems are meant to make companies and businesses operate more efficiently when they are not. The main goal for a company is to choose a vender that will give them the safest and easiest way to operate efficiently and achieve their business goals.

What is ERP?

• “An Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are software systems for business management, supporting areas such as planning, manufacturing, sales, marketing, distribution, accounting, finance, human resource management, project management, inventory management, service and maintenance, transportation, and e-business”.( Haag, Cummings, Phillips, S, M, A (2007). Mangement Information Systems. New Yory, NY: The McGraw-Hill Company Inc..)
The ERP system allows a strategic flow of information between all areas within an enterprise in a consistently productive manner.
• The purpose of implementing an ERP system in a company is when the company isn’t operating efficiently. Look at it like this, when your body is sick, you know you need to take medicine, you just can’t stand the taste. And in the same matter when your company isn’t operating efficiently, you’ve got to take steps to correct it. Most companies just fear the disruption, the learning, and the cost and the inconvenience of it all. “Another way to look at or understand ERP is cars have dashboards so the driver can get to where he or she wants to go. Airports have control towers to make sure everything and everyone gets to where they need to be. All of your typical individual machines have control panels so you can make them do what they are supposed to do”. (Jones, W (2006, 01). Roadmap to Fusion: Engaging Oracle Consulting on the path to your next business platform. Orcacle Corporation World Headquarters,)
When you think about, it shouldn’t a business have the same kind of single point of control? Enterprise Resource Planning Software provides the level of oversight and control that is absolutely necessary for you, as a manager or owner, to make sure that all of your resources are all working towards the same goal. The hard part is choosing an ERP system that works for your company. No two manufacturers run exactly the same way, and similarly no two ERP systems run exactly the same way. So it’s important to research the product and the vendor to make certain that you select the right system for your business. You’ve got to have a system that fully integrates all aspects of running your manufacturing business, offers advanced features and options but is intuitive and easy to use so employees can grasp hold quickly, and adapts to the way you do business rather than forcing you to adapt to the software.

ERP History
The development of the systems dates back to the year 1960. The systems in past years were designed to aid the manufacturing process. The first software that was developed in this process was MRP (material resource planning) in the year 1975. This was followed by another advanced version namely MRP2 which is the acronym for Manufacturing Resource planning, but none of them yielded the benefit of ERP. These soft wares were helpful in manufacturing process. Their benefits did not extend to other parts. ERP was developed as multifaceted software that little by little stretched its limits into further areas like human resource, finance, marketing and so on. Furthermore ERP offered operational convenience and large decline in cost coupled with further benefits when compared with prior software’s.
ERP came into effect in 1990 though the fact remained that many people are of the belief that ERP existed from the year 1960 in the form of MRP1 and MRP2. In fact MRP2 was more or less an ERP except for its failure to coordinate departments other than marketing. The whole period from the 1960 was denoted as the age of ERP. The advantage of ERP was gradually felt from this stage onwards. Sap ERP history contained detailed study of SAP’s involvement with ERP. The ERP leader SAP technologies were established in the year 1972 by five engineers. It was followed by the invention of Larson software which was built in model. It was intended to replace the market practice of designing software’s as an individual business need. Other companies such as Oracle and Baan Corporation were included in the tussle in 1970 and 1980’s. Also following this was the invention of People Soft and their software on Human Resource Management in the year 1987 and 1988. Baan Corporation specializes in representation of financial and management consultation services. Oracle was the first company to ever offer commercial and relational database management systems. Between the vendors of ERP SAP holds the right of being the world’s largest enterprise company. “JD Edwards and Oracle enjoy a whooping customer base of 4,700(In 100 countries) and 41,000 customers around the globe.” People Soft controls more than half of the human resource market and has offices in several nations.
Oracle and History

• “Oracle came about at least three decades ago, a man name Larry Ellison saw a chance other companies missed when he came across a description of a working prototype for a relational database and discovered that no company had devoted to commercializing the technology”. (Oraccle. Retrieved October 24, 2008, from Oracle Web site: www.oracle.com/corporate/story./html)
Ellison along with his co-founders, Bob Miner and Ed Oates, realized there was incredible business potential in the relational database model, but they may not have realized that they would transform the face of business computing forever. By being a much smaller company and the flexibility of a smaller company Oracle has proved throughout its history that it can construct for the future on the foundation of years of innovation intimate knowledge of its customers’ challenges and successes, and the greatest technical and business minds in the world. The company through the years has shown both the ability to leverage its massive size and strength to supply its customers, as well as the capacity to make decisions that overturn the conventional wisdom and take its products and services in a new direction.
• After 30 years, Oracle still remains the gold standard for database technology and applications in enterprises throughout the world. Oracle is the world’s leading supplier of software for information management, and the world’s second largest independent software company. “Oracle technology can be found in nearly every industry, and in the data centers of 98 of the Fortune 100 companies.”( Oraccle. Retrieved October 24, 2008, from Oracle Web site: www.oracle.com/corporate/story./html)
Also Oracle is the first software company to develop and install 100% internet enabled enterprise software across its entire product line: database, business applications, and application development and decision support tools.
