Enough is a 2002 thriller directed by Michael Apted and written by Nicholas Kazan. This film is very similar to the Stephen King’s 1995 film adaptation of Dolores Claiborne directed by Taylor Hackford. The protagonists in both these films find themselves trapped in abusive relationships and turn to drastic means to protect themselves and their daughters. In the film Enough, Slim runs away with her daughter from her abusive husband to protect her life whereas, Dolores, in Dolores Claiborne is trapped in her little small town with her husband who is abusive to her and is now sexually abusing their daughter. These women find themselves in these abusive relationships and become empowered to take control of their lives. The writers skillfully use literary elements in these films to convey this message. The conflict in Enough is between Slim and her very abusive husband Mitch. He sweeps Slim off her feet in a small little diner, they get married and seem blissfully happy. They settle down into a beautiful house and have a daughter named Gracie. Several years later Mitch’s attention starts to waiver and we find out he is having an affair. Symbols included are the eclipse, rough hands, Selena’s mirror reflection and a wine named Black and White to demonstrate the consequences of abuse. The eclipse scene symbolizes the death of Dolores’s husband and a time for new beginnings. She is now free of her abusive husband and can take back her life and protect her daughter. Dolores’s rough hands are a symbol of a hard rough life and the burden of killing her husband. Selena mirror image which reflects the back of her heads symbolizes her repression of the sexual abuse she experience at the hands of her father. Another prevalent symbol to me is the idea of sin. In The Ministers Black Veil Hooper just suddenly one day shows up to church wearing a veil. At first the people are sort of angered by it. People soon start to flock to his congregation to view the spectacle, and go so far as to test their '"'courage'"' by seeing who will go and talk to him. I think that the veil could represent sin. In The Ministers Black Veil Hooper was either trying to hide his sin from the people so that they could not judge him, which is god"'"s job, or maybe he was trying to protecting his self from the sins of the people. In the end of The Ministers Black Veil Hooper dies, and sees his congregation all wearing black veils, which would probably hint that maybe it represented the sin in all of us. In The Birthmark Georgiana"'"s birthmark could represent, as some religions believe, the original sin which is bestowed on all by the '"'hand'"' of god. But, unlike Hooper, Georgiana could not help her markings.
The 1989 film Do the Right Thing displays a story about racial tension in a predominantly African-American neighborhood. Spike Lee not only directed and produced this film but he was also the main character, Mookie. In spite of maintaining these three jobs, Lee incorporated cinematic techniques that allowed his film to unlock controversial ideals for both Caucasian and African-American viewers. Through the use of camera elements Lee was able to display emotions and tone of the scene without using stating it directly. Lee exhibited film methods such as low-angle shots, close ups, slow motion and panning.
My film choice shows that color and lighting sets the mood for social status as well as segregation in its rarest form. The Help takes place in Jackson, Mississippi in the 60’s and shows us the reality of segregation from both sides and how persistence pays off. Skeeter’s persistence in becoming an accomplished writer and the courage of the housekeepers to overcome their fears of the white society, all come to the forefront in this film.

Symbolism is an important aspect in stories, whether big or small. Symbolism makes the reader think. It is used to represent something but does not reveal itself right away. Symbolism adds creativity to an already creative piece. Throughout a novel a reader may spend his/her time trying to conclude what each object in a story represents. Though not all stories have symbolism, those that do possess more excitement than those that do not. In the novella Aura by Carlos Fuentes, there is an extensive use of symbolism. The presence of symbolism throughout the novel is undeniable. Each of the symbols in the work are representative of a certain aspect of the characters lives. Dreams showed readers the desire of characters to escape their realities. The twins that Senora Valencia gives birth to are clearly meant to represent the neighboring nations of Haiti and The Dominican Republic. Water is primarily symbolic of life and death, but in this case readers are expected to come to their own conclusions regarding the river. Using these symbols allows the author to make discrete yet important additions to her writing without disrupting the format of the novel. Aside from serving as a benefit to the authors writing style, they can also be seen as an artistic addition which brings the entire novel to a different level. Piter FM is a film that depicts women to be much more independent and in control, which is in contrast to the Russian films we have watched previously. In Brother and in Little Vera the women were portrayed to be limited to what the male figures in their life wanted from them. Masha showcases that she is control of her life, and shows this by not marrying Kostya in the end. The movie, The Mission (1986), depicts events in South America, likely in what is now the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In the movie, a slave trader named Rodrigo Mendoza, played by Robert De Niro, makes his living by capturing slaves and bringing them to the Spanish Governor’s plantation. There, he catches his fiancée sleeping with his younger half-brother, which causes him, in a rage, to kill his younger brother. Due to this, he eventually joins a Jesuit mission. After coming into contact with a group of natives, and being accepted by them, he formally takes the vows to become a Jesuit priest. When the land their mission is on switches hands from the Spanish to the Portuguese, however, the safety of their mission is put into question, due the Portuguese affinity for native slaves, as well as Pombal’s dislike of the Jesuits. Seeing that the Portuguese would take over the mission, Mendoza forsakes his vows, and prepares the natives for what would become the fight of their lives. The Portuguese, however, soon overwhelm the priests and the natives, killing Mendoza, as well as the other priests in the mission, notably Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) and Father Fielding (Liam Neeson), who had been instrumental in Mendoza’s path to the priesthood. Some of the natives escape, and move further inward toward the center of South America.

While working her shift slim has a customer that starts harassing her over the name she has, but the companion of the annoying customer defends slim, which in turn starts a romance, later to become a marriage between the two (Kazan, 2002). The couple is later blessed with a daughter they name Gracie, and at the beginning the marriage seems to be a fairy tale out of a story book (Kazan, 2002). I will analyze Lars Von Trier “Manderlay” with regards to the following five factors: setting, props, characterization, theme and genre. Trier create the movie “Manderlay” and several more to generates the idea of American greed, racism, and the misuse of power. To whom he thought that American was unrecognizable to any American was irrelevant. Even though, most Hollywood movies deny their entertainment as a pretend act. Presenting imaginary worlds was a way that showed unrealistic sense of reality but came off as if they were real. The movie itself was fiercely venomous.
