THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY!! Oh goodness the 18th century… There is so much to say about the 1700s such as it was a time of enlightenment! Now now do not let the word enlightenment take you for a loop and think this was a time for strictly gaining knowledge and understanding because…Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Yes, that’s right Wars! Throughout the 18th there were numerous wars such as the Seven Years War and the War of the Spanish Succession in which we will discuss farther down. This timeline will focus on mostly only WARS because like stated above the 18th century was packed with them, but will also touch on, the enlightenment of course, expansion, Slave Trade, and some lagniappe. Now let’s begin with the year 1700: 1700: June of 1700 was not a good day for Roman Catholic Priests in Massachusetts. On this day a law passed that allowed for imprisonment or expectation of any Roman Catholic Priests if they did not leave the colony within three months of time. 1700: The Age of Enlightenment: the Age of Enlightenment began in the late 17th and 18th century. When the Age of Enlightenment began actually brings up some disagreements. Many argue that it started when Descartes published Discourse on Method in 1637. Others would argue that it actually started in 1687 with Isaac Newton’s publication of Principa Mathematica. Regardless of when the Age of Enlightenment began it the point is it happened and it brought a lot of change. The Enlightenment mostly changed religious views. This age marked the change of people’s views and a shift from religion to science. People began to believe to shift views from God controlling the universe to there is a God but humans are controlling their own actions. Through this timeline we have also spoke briefly about the China in regards of Qing Dynasty and have discussed some lagniappe such as expulsion of Roman Catholics Massachusetts. This timeline also attempted to incorporate information from all around the world so that one would get the feel of what it was like in different places during the 18th century.
Unlike previous centuries, the eighteenth century was the dawn of a new age in Western Europe where intellectuals thrived, science was honored, and curiosity was encouraged; and the framework of how civil society was changed as a whole. From the dawn of the Enlightenment, Western European culture was changing due to the revolutionary new ideas that were changing. With the social change going on, political change was as evident as time went on. With these changes rooted in social change, the effects of the Enlightenment can be seen over 18th century Western Europe and beyond. Towards the late 1780s the late German Philosopher Immanuel Kant described the Enlightenment as, “Man leaving his self caused immaturity” ( Spiel Vogel 503).
The Enlightenment is the era were the intellectual, scientific and individual freedom, centered upon the 18th Century; there were many important people of this time that brought forth many new concepts. For example, Benjamin Franklin, he brought many new inventions to this era, such as the Poor Richards’ Almanac, lightening rod, harmonica, and his own thought on the Christian outlook. Secondly, Sir Isaac Newton discovered the laws of nature such as, gravitation. The Enlightenment was the time period that followed the Scientific Revolution and was characterized as the "Age of Reason". This was the time when man began to use his reason to discover the world around him rather than blindly follow what the previous authority, such as the Church and Classical Philosophers, stated to be true. The Enlightenment was a tremendously broad movement that dominated much of the European thinking during the 18th century, however, several core themes that epitomized the movement were the idea of progress, skepticism against the Church, and individualism.
There are many different ways in which the Enlightenment affected the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution. One way was the by the idea of a Social Contract; an agreement by which human beings are said to have abandoned the "state of nature" in order to form the society in which they now live. HOBBES, LOCKE, and J.J. ROUSSEAU each developed differing versions of the social contract, but all agreed that certain freedoms had been surrendered for society's protection and that the government has definite responsibilities to its citizens. Locke believed that governments were formed to protect the natural rights of men, and that overthrowing a government that did not protect these rights was not only a right, but also an obligation. His thoughts influenced many revolutionary pamphlets and documents, including the Virginia Constitution of 1776, and the Declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights was created as a listing of the rights granted to citizens, the Bill of Rights serves to protect the people from a too powerful government. These civil rights granted to U.S. Citizens are included in the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Additionally, Locke’s ideas about checks and balances and the division of church and state were later embodied in the U.S. Constitution as well. The Constitution replaced a more weakly organized system of government as outlined under the Articles of Confederation.
The Enlightenment was the highlight of the eighteenth century because it brought about dramatic change that was a rebirth of the classical ideas of Greece and Rome. This philosophical, cultural, and social movement spread through England, France, Germany, and other parts of Europe as a result of the unsuccessful ways of feudalism. It resulted in an intelligent and more aware society due to the revival of government, philosophy, and morals.
Enlightenment had an enormous impact on educated, well to do people in Europe and America. It supplied them with a common vocabulary and a unified view of the world, one that insisted that the enlightened 18th century was better, and wiser, than all previous ages. The Enlightenment is a unique time in European history characterized by revolutions in science, philosophy, society, and politics. These revolutions put Europe in a transition from the medieval world-view to the modern western world. The traditional hierarchical political and social orders from the French monarchy and Catholic Church were destroyed and replaced by a political and social order from the Enlightenment ideals of freedom and equality(Bristow, 1). The Scientific revolution in the 16th and 17th centuries changed the way that people views the world. Scientific philosophers such as Galileo and Descartes threw out the old teachings of the church and challenged them with new ways of thinking. These men sought to prove that rational thought could prove the existence of God. They also challenged that it was an understanding of a series of rational thoughts, not faith, would bring understanding of how the world worked. Traditional ways of thinking were ultimately challenged by logical and sensible rationale.
In the mid 1700’s to the start of the 1900’s the world had major revolutions and wars. That period of time the world had changed and it hasn’t stopped evolving yet, we are still coming up with great inventions today. If it wasn’t for these revolutions our world would still be the same, If it wasn’t for the thinkers of enlightenment like Rousseau countries like America and France would still be the same,because they wouldn’t have fought for the rights. If you are a thinker of enlightenment you would understand that everyone should have the equal rights and this was a great example for the rich, poor and the slaves.
Advancement from Enlightenment As the 1900's rolled around, many changes were to come. New leaders, government styles, and new ideas were just the start. The main focus of the Enlightenment era was based on reason, rationalism, and the idea of "Inevitable Progress. " Enlightenment was pushed forward by great people such as Kant, Bulgaria, Thomas Jefferson, Isaac Newton, Francois-Marie Ardouet de Voltaire, Thomas Hobbes, to name a few.

The Enlightenment began or could be said to have been propelled by the scientific revolution of the earlier centuries, particularly the Newtonian universe, as modernizing science gradually undermined the ancient Western geocentric idea of the universe as well as accompanying set of presuppositions that had been constraining and influencing philosophical inquiry (Bristow; Lewis; Mattey).

The epoch of Romanticism was a reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment. The movement of Romanticism began in 1760 and ended in 1871. Romanticism as a movement was a reaction to the Enlightenment as a cultural movement, an aesthetic style, and an attitude of mind (210).
The age of Enlightenment was a progression of the cultural and intellectual changes in Europe that had resulted from the scientific revolution during the sixteenth and seventeenth century. The scientific revolution and the discoveries made about the natural world would ultimately challenge the way people perceived the world around them. Scientist found real answers, by questioning flawed ancient beliefs that were widely held and maintained by the church. Ultimately, these discoveries and scientific advancements would evolve and effect social, cultural, and political developments in Europe over the course of time. The scientific revolution had provided certainty about the natural world that had long been questioned. With these new developments came the progression and influence of thought, rationality, and individualism. These new ideas would be the hallmark for the Enlightenment movement that would shape most of Europe in the eighteenth century.
