It has been known that a human language has four skills writing , reading , speaking and listening ; Listening and reading are receptive skills, speaking and writing are productive skills. There are more seven thousands languages around the world . English language is a global language. Generally, language considers a source of communication . As writing is one of the essential skills of a language , so it is a way of communication .It is considered a tool of expression. According to Byran (1976, p. 115) writing 's purpose is to communicate the information efficiently and you have to build up your sentences correctly, to convey the meaning in clear picture . In other words , Byran (1976, p. 13) states that a good writing has elementary principles which are" grammar, punctuation, sentence structure , pronoun usage and effective writing style."Technical professionals need to master many different types of communication ,both oral and written".(Huckin and Olsen, 1983,p. 11) .It might seem that it needs to more work on basic writing skills. English Language Learners (ELL) require thoughtful and careful instruction for both reading and writing education. Both of these skills are necessary for a bright future and to be a functioning citizen in Canada. Those that do not possess considerable literacy levels will be effectively 'locked out' from so much knowledge, information and ideas that are part of the culture of society (Christie 1990, 20). Having a low level of literacy usually means acquiring an unskilled job. The relationship between literacy levels and poverty is something that should not be ignored (Gibbons, 2002). Developing literacy skills in ELLs is a daunting task and especially with students that have not developed those skills in their first language originally. Through the Curriculum Cycle and proper scaffolding of writing strategies, this paper will provide a lesson plan that will help develop an ELL's writing skills. It will include many different tools that will help students gain an understanding and confidence of the narrative writing form.
Writing has been part of my life ever since I learned how to spell my first words. As I use the writing process I had to evolve and learn grammar, orthodoxy, and punctuation. I learned all this in my language which is Spanish. The writing rules are very different in different languages and after having an idea on how to write in English, I always refer back to what I learned in my early years. As I write in English I have faced many challenges to include learning to think in English before I write. I am use to think in Spanish and therefore the words flow as a river with minimum effort on my part. I have tried to think in Spanish, translate my thoughts and then writing in English but has proven to be the most difficult process to follow. As I wrestled with the idea of writing in English and learning to think in English, my writing has become better with each assignment. As I reflect on how my writing has evolved, it is my intention to compare how the different tools and genres of writing had helped me write academically papers and how I expect to continue to better myself for mu future, even after I graduate from college.
The writing process has many different steps. Each step has unique attributes. People struggle with each of the different steps in the writing process. Some people have trouble thinking of what to write about, others have trouble editing and revising. Wrapping up the writing process with a strong conclusion can also be troublesome for many people. In this paper we will be discussing the first step in the writing process, what professional writers think about how to get started. We will be discussing the important first steps to make the beginning process of writing easier. The steps in the beginning of the writing process include creating a plan, brainstorming and writing a draft.
Writing is an art form that some people are blessed with being naturally talented at, and some individuals must learn and be instructed in order to become a talented writer. In our modern day American society, there is a strong need to have talented writers, so there is a large push to teach writing from grade school all the way up through college. I am an individual who was never naturally good at writing, but I was taught how to be a good writing. From my education I think I have made great strides in my ability and can pick out some qualities that distinguish good writing from bad writing. Overall, good writing takes many forms.
In the chapter, “Internal Revision,” Murray discusses the writing process and how we as teachers should teach it. He states, “And yet rewriting is one of the writing skills least researched, least examined, least understood, and—usually—least taught” (75). I believe that rewriting is a vital step of writing an essay, story, or anything that you are putting together. Growing up in school, I never had a revision time. Once it was due, we had to turn it in and then we get it back with a letter grade. With not knowing why you got the grade and how you can fix it makes you discouraged for the next assignment. It was not until high school that I started to get a little feedback from the teachers on why I got the grade that I did. We still did not
Writing a college essay can be hard. and writing a good unique college essay can be even harder. Writing a good distinct essay can be hard. It’s hard because writing is not my best subject. I usually always go to my peers to help me get ideas I search the web for ideas. The most important thing to do differently is the way you go about writing your paper when writing it. When you give students an essay topic you never receive the same written essay. You always get a different written and typed essay, some are funny, some are boring, some might make you cry, and so on. I think that the way someone is pursuing the subject is important. Not all topics are going to be the best topics to write about but if you can take a boring topic and make it interesting you 've already won the reader in my opinion.
writing” by R. Ramsey, the ability to write competently is a requirement for success in any field.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.

How are you Mrs. Griffin? I was just sitting and reading the old assignments that I did a year ago. I couldn't stop thinking about how much I hated writing until you taught me the basic skill of plotting everything down on a piece of paper before I start writing. I have finally adopted a habit that helps me write and think over my topic before I even pick up the pen.
“Man is an animal that lives in language as a fish lives in water and so written communication is just one of the ways that man can survive through” (English scholar Annie Dillard). Writing is a skill to give information. Like all skills, it is not inborn and so it needs to be learnt. To give information you need good communication skills including the ability to write simply, clearly and concisely (Harris & Cunningham, 1996).
The ability to write well is not a naturally acquired skill; it is usually learned or culturally transmitted as a set of practices in formal instructional settings or other environments. Writing skills must be practiced and learned through experience. Writing also involves composing, which implies the ability either to tell or retell pieces of information in the form of narratives or description, or to transform information into new texts, as in expository or argumentative writing. Perhaps it is best viewed as a continuum of activities that range from the more mechanical or formal aspects of “writing down” on the one end, to the more complex act of composing on the other end (Omaggio Hadley, 1993). It is undoubtedly the act of
According to The College Board’s recent study on the essentiality of effective writing in the workplace, “Two-thirds of salaried employees in large American companies have some writing responsibility” (Kerrey). If a college student plans on exiting college and obtaining a job, adequate writing skills will likely be required. The National Association of Colleges and Employers found in a 2010 study that “Communication skills are ranked first among a job candidate’s 'must have' skills and qualities.” So, the need to communicate well in a workplace makes adequate writing skills increasingly necessary for any potential member of the
