“I’ve always been a numbers guy,” is what I tell myself when I think about reading and writing. It’s the saying: “If you’re great with math, then you’re lousy with English,” and vice versa. As long as I can remember, English has been my least preferred subject in school and mathematics, of course, my favorite. Why is it that I dislike English classes so much? It can’t possibly be because my brain is wired to think that way. Can it be because English is my second language? But I’ve been fluent in English since early elementary school. One of my biggest fears returning to school, was having to write because I know how long it takes my mind to transfer my thoughts successfully onto paper. For us, that meant driving to Mexico every summer and winter break. There is nothing wrong with this, and I have a lot of great memories from all these trips that I wouldn’t trade for anything else. Thousands of families successfully accomplish these trips every year, but what made us different was that we would stay longer than normal. I remember too many times when school would start for my Mexican native cousins and we were still there. They would leave in the morning for school and I was stuck waiting all day for them to come back in the afternoon. Who knows what my parents were thinking and why they thought it was acceptable to have their child return to school a week or two late. They would assume that I would catch up and everything would be normal, but it was difficult to keep this up year after year. The most obvious is my difficulty with subtraction and being able to identify and know the definitions for nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Meaning I have difficulty with the definitions of basic sentence parts. I learned to adapt as my elementary and middle school education progressed without the skills the other students possessed. Not having a firm grasp on basic English composition, has resulted in a lifetime of difficulty. In my sophomore year of high school, my English teacher was Mrs. Chiesa. In her class, the seat I chose was in the back right corner of the class with all my friends. The group we made wasn’t the best group to have in class as we would be disruptive at times. Sometime during the school year, while my friends were being rowdy, I was singled out and made to move to the opposite side of the classroom. I remember thinking, “Why must I be the one who moves, if I’m not the one who was being difficult.” Reflecting back on this, maybe she thought I had more to offer than they did and had more learning potential which she saw inside of me.
