English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) The importance of English language is on the increase since it is the most powerful language being spoken in all around the world. English is not only an international language that people must learn for the sake of globalization and internationalization, but it is also a language that play a significant role in different sectors, specifically in teaching mathematics, social, and scientific subjects in primary schools to high schools, colleges and in universities. English Medium Instruction is a phenomenon that grows rapidly. Graddol (2005) predict that English will become a second language for many, if not most, of the world’s citizens by 2050 (p. 29). For example, in 2013, due to the challenges that were faced with the implementation of EMI in Punjab, the British Council launched the Punjab Education and English Language Initiative (PEELI) in coordination with the department of staff development (DSD). PEELI is a project that will continue until the year 2018, and the aim of the project is to train 180,000 primary schools teachers who will be teaching English, Math, science, and computer science to 15 million students in 56,000 schools in all over Punjab whom will be aged 5-14. With that in mind, there are universities in Hong Kong and in other English speaking countries that offer courses and training for English teachers to perform better in terms of EMI. For example, Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education is one of them that offer training for English language teachers.
