Ender’s Game & Variant The author, Orson Scott Card was born in Richland, Washington in 1951. He is a descendant of Brigham Young. Orson has spent a lot of his life working with the Mormon church, Later Day Saints. He even put off completing his education as a theatre major at BYU to go to Brazil for two years and do mission work. As a young boy Orson read a variety of literary wrks that were well advanced for his age. He read the likes of The Prince and the Pauper, and The Army of the Potomac as a young boy. He would later read the books of Aristotle, Plato and the other great minds while he was still in high school. These books would later shape his style of writing in his books. After college, He would start his own play company, but These themes include: games, manipulation, compassion, ruthlessness, isolation, and friendship. In the book, the games are the used for the training. The bigger picture is that they are what is used to have Ender do the one thing he would not, destroy the Bugger home world. Whether it was the fantasy game that looked at his mental heath or if it was the games where he learned tactics they were constant throughout the book. The games cause it hard to decipher what is real and what is not. This causes complications that are sen throughout the book. Another thing in the book is manipulation. That is seen in two very different ways. The first way is the manipulation that is done by the adults on Ender. Ender is the smartest kid in the world. His problem is he does not want to really destroy the Buggers. He is so empathetic that the adults in his life have to manipulate them so that he will achieve the one thing they want. They do this by making him play the games and isolating him from the others. They single him out and make him into a target. All of these things were done to create the perfect soldier. They eventually manipulate him one last time when he plays a series of games that he thinks will end the training. Another theme is isolation. From the very beginning of his time at Battle School Ender is isolated. He is singled out as the smartest in his launch. This creates envy among the other Launchies. They will then treat him There are only a few of those characters that are important though. This characters include: Ender, Valentine, Peter, Mazer Rackham, and Colonel Graff. Ender is the main character in the book that is supposed to lead the Third Invasion against the Bugger home world. He is the last great hope for the Earth. Valentine is his older sister. She is Ender’s protector and friend when he is at home. She is the compassionate one that could never lead an army into battle. She is also Desmotheses in the book. Peter is his brother and oldest sibling. He is the ruthless one. He torments Ender and his sister when they are young. He is also known as Locke in the book and eventually takes over the political system on Earth and becomes its leader. Colonel Graff is the soldier from the International Fleet, or IF that oversees Ender’s training. He first does and takes Ender to Battle School. He also makes the decisions at the school on when to advance him and how hard to push him. He then will be replaced as head of the Battle School when it is time for Ender to go to Command School. He is then Ender’s teacher and mentor for a while. He may even be called Ender’s friend. Finally, there is Mazer Rackham. He is Ender’s finally teacher. He is also the hardest on Ender. He pushes him almost to his breaking point. He is also responsible for the greatest manipulation of Ender. The book is set in two places. Greensboro, North Carolina where Peter,
