Towards the beginning of Reconstruction, it seemed as if things were heading in the right direction towards racial equality with the confederate surrendering the civil war to the union on May 9, 1865 and slavery officially ending December 6th 1865 with the 13th amendment of the constitution being ratified. So with all of these things happening African Americans and white people of the south had very different reactions to what was happening at the time. African Americans were excited and happy to see the change they wanted to see for 245 years finally happening. Whereas the south just lost the foundation that they had built their lives on in a matter of a couple of months after the civil war and they were trying there hardest to not let the north take control of the way they do things. Which is why I think that the civil war was not worth the bloodshed due to the fact that the north was not ready for how far the south were willing to go in order to make things back to how they were before the civil war.
At the time about 4 million slaves had been handed freedom. They believed that with this they were heading quickly toward being equal to their oppressors and that they could live a normal life. However, this was an extremely bumpy road and they had to face an abundance of issues before they finally were given complete freedom. Throughout reconstruction for every three steps forward that were taken towards racial equality and complete freedom there was also another three steps backwards.
During the beginning of reconstruction, the south was in a state of panic because their entire way of living had just completely changed. For a while the south was trying to adjust to what had happened to them however towards the end of reconstr...

...the north give up with this fight due to the fact that the north are ready to move on from this. So once this happens the south were able to get their way of living back to the way it was putting African Americans in a very similar position as they were before the civil war. While the north kept enacting amendments that would seem as if they would help out nonwhites there was always a way that the south could bend the rules so that it never truly came into effect. For example, the fifteenth amendment which allowed all people to vote no matter their race or ethnicity. However, through loopholes the south was able to exploit this amendment through the use of literacy test and poll taxes. Through things like this it makes the civil war pointless because the entire reason that the civil war happened was to end slavery which on paper it did however in reality it did not.
