Employment Law
Employment laws differ from state to state all across the country. Although the federal government has select few standard laws that each state has to go by, the individual states get to pick the majority of their own employment laws. In 2014, President Barack Obama addresses some key issues in his State of the Union address. Employment laws can be controversial in some states. Many employees often feel like they are being treated unfairly by their employers. The key issues in employment law are wages, benefits, and discrimination in the work place. The regulations on these issues can change as often as every years and the federal government has the power to change them whenever they feel that the laws and regulations that state has put into effect are unjust or unconstitutional.
First, wages are among the most controversial things in the world. Many states argue that their minimum wage is too low and that they deserve more than what they are being paid. In 2014, President Barack Obama petitioned Congress to raise minimum wage from $7.25/ hour to $10.10/ hour (Bailey). Some people believe that raising minimum wage would cause a major influx in the economy because employees would have more money to spend as a result of the raise in their pay. While others believe that raising minimum wage would damage the already poor United States economy even more so. Increasing minimum wage will require business to pay nearly forty percent more towards wages than they currently are. Business would lose a large profit if their product prices remain the same. If employee wages rise, so will the prices on the goods that United States citizens buy every day.

Over all, employment law is an extremely controversial topic in the United States. Issues such as wages, benefits, and discrimination are just a few among many. Employers all over the United States have to work together with their employees to create a work environment that is good for both employee and employer, while also meeting all regulations that are set by the federal government. Some issues will always be controversial and there will always be matters on employment brought to the court room. A good employer/employee relationship can often resolve any conflicts before the judicial system has to be involved.
