Companies have come to understand that employees are a competitive advantage. Performance management has become a tangible connection where managers monitor the contributions of employees to the organizations ambitions. Google has become one of the world’s largest company, founded in 1998 the company’s product and services include advertising, search engine, productivity tools, enterprise products and computer software. Most companies use monetary compensation as a motivating factor for employees. However, Googles approach within the performance management system is to use positive and encouraging feedback as the driving force within performance. The company understands they hire talented and creative people motivated to change the world and the transparency within the company helps fuel its success.

Describe any informal performance feedback that takes place.

The informal performance feedback and quite unique approach to driving employee performance is the ability for anyone in the company to view your OKR’s. Employees can view peer’s OKR’s on their employee profile and see where they are currently trending. This breeds performance expectations and breeds competition amongst each other. It breeds encouragement as OKR’s are not used to determine promotions, and allows employees to focus on the tasks they set forth. “OKRs at a company level, at a team level, at a managerial level, and at a personal level. They all work together to keep the company on track” (Jay Yarrow).

Reviewing the OKR system it almost seems separate from that of any human resources department. Creating maintaining and expanding the partnership could benefit the overall goals set forth within the organization.
