Throughout Term 1 I had to conduct research about the graduate market on employers from the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers. Conducting this researching showed me the traits of a highly successful employer. Whilst looking at the graduate market on specific companies such as Freshfields and Allen & Ovary, and completing work experience in an immigration law firm called Fragomen, I have discovered the significant rise and falls of employment and salaries that a career in a specific chosen field can go through. Getting a job after you graduate depends solely on the job market at the time, which could have a great impact on career plans. In my first lecture for this module, Laura Hooke spoke about the most prestigious and most successful law firms in the City according to gross fees, including Clifford Chance, Jones Day and Freshfields. This part of Laura Hookes talk influenced me to aim high, particularly with regards to large City law firms like those mentioned. During my time at Fragomen's, the legal assistant I worked alongside, gave me contacts for barristers and solicitors and taught me that experience is key; not only for your employers to see how you handle work in this industry but also for your own benefit to decide which sector best suits you. This influenced me to apply for various law firms in order to decide on my chosen sector to strengthen my skills and experience and educated me on the importance of the direction of employment you take.

...y reading law articles and most recent cases to deepen my understanding and keeping an eye on the job market over the next few years which will allow me to get a feel for the institutions that regularly hire in my area, and to be constantly reminded of the attributes that employers are looking for. This will push me to complete a master's degree as I will be on a higher rank of employability and it will further my career prospects and will also increase my chances of getting a job once I've finished my degree leaving me with the enthusiasm and determination needed to reach my end goal. Through making SMART goals, I have learnt that I achieve more when I put my mind to it and believe I can. Before setting SMART goals I would set the impossible and try to reach it without any steps to getting there. Now, I believe I have an achievable career path to becoming a lawyer.
As I became more involved with campus life, I couldn’t find a way to immerse myself in preparing for a career in law. Also, I must enter into the career field fully aware that the payments which I am aligning myself to receive also have the ability to fluctuate. There must always be a remembrance of the events and lifestyles that I have undergone in order to become a corporate lawyer within a pinnacle nation of modern civilization.
One of the best ways to follow a successful path is to set goals for yourself. They are important to keep yourself on task and to get to a desired point of self fulfillment. The issue can be how to achieve goals in a successful manner. The issue is "Although people may desire or intend to attain some outcome, they are not committed to that as a goal until they are willing to invest affect, cognition, and behavior in attaining it" (Traci Mann, 2013). This is why it is important to have a set path on how to accomplish important goals. I have chosen three goals that I want to accomplish to demonstrate a Process known as SMART, to help accomplish them. There goals are that I want to finally earn a college degree(personal), I want to make it into the honor society while earning my degree(academic), and I want to earn my degree in order to contribute to Autism research(professional). All of these goals range in the amount of time it will take to accomplish them. Some are long term, but I can still use the SMART goal process in order to achieve them. The SMART steps to follow are:
Goals play a very essential role in the organization of responsibilities and how my mind works. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in criminal justice with a concentration in Trauma Studies. Setting goals for my major is what keeps me focused and motivated in achieving it. My goals are to acquire a degree in criminal justice that challenges me to work harder and measure the skills and obstacles that come with it. Passionate, determined, and understanding is what I hope to gain from following my goals and aspirations in this field. My aspirations as a criminal justice major is to bring change, even the slightest change that could help an individual in life. A change in the way the law is viewed or enforced, a change in the sentencing of criminals.
The next set of goal setting importance is my personal goals with the first being to over come the obstacles associated with returning to school.
After graduating college, finding a stable job is often the most important goal one could achieve. The crossroads recent graduates may face the decision between pursuing a job in the academia or the professional world. In order to successfully acquire a job in the academic world, a person should understand and use a C.V. On the other hand, if a person is seeking a job without any serious background, a resume would be appropriate to present during an interview. It is crucial to recognize that there are many divergent characteristics between the two documents. The C.V. and the resume are tailored for different audiences and with slightly different purposes. The C.V. has a detailed list of the subject’s past while the resume only has brief bulleted points about the subject. Additionally, the two pieces differ greatly in their lengths due to their content. On the other hand, resumes and C.V.s are comparable in numerous ways as well. C.V.s and resumes both contain similar information about the candidate. Additionally, the two documents are categorized in a similar manner. Ultimately, the C.V. and resume both are designed to help a person acquire a job in different fields. While the C.V. is tailored for a person seeking a job in academia, the resume helps people find work in the professional world. C.V.s and resumes have their own clear objectives and can be a wonderful tool when it comes to winning a job over the next guy.
Currently, my goal is to get into UW Madison, and getting my undergrad at Eau Claire will give me the education needed to continue with my career goals. I would like to be a corporate lawyer someday, working in a company’s law department. Even when I am out of higher education, I aim to be constantly learning new things to benefit myself and others as a professional in a work setting. By doing this, I will be able to better myself in my career and work my way up the corporate ladder. I want to be able to take constructive criticism in an acceptable manner in the workplace, which will only improve what I am doing. My college experience will help me with this if I work on taking constructive criticism positively at Eau Claire. I want to find satisfaction in my career and feel good about what I am doing. This will help me to perform tasks better and more timely. As well, I hope to make connections with coworkers and clients so work will be more enjoyable. Employability skills and Career readiness have become an integral part of education. Employers are looking for people with a combination of skills such as soft skills, customer service skills and life skills. Not having sufficient employability skill sets, is one of the main reason for many students not getting selected in campus drives. Focus is more on technical knowledge than soft skills in their curriculum. During the course of their education , required level of importance is not given to key qualities like effective communication, leadership qualities, time management skills, self motivation, problem solving skills and creative thinking.
...elieve simply writing these goals out will manifest themselves and I look at where I came from to where I am now and where I can be in the future. I am very enthusiastic about advancing both in academia and career wise above all I am excited about the positive affects my journey will exsanguinate to others clients, family members, friends, and colleagues. As these people will positively affect my journey too in my point of view most things are circular and transactional. We all contribute to each other one way or another.
Completing this unit has changed the manner that I will approach future tasks as I am now acutely aware of the importance of planning in a structured and defined way and has radically altered the way I way I view CPD.
Employability is a multifaceted concept and one of the major subjects of debate in terms of what it is, how it is measured, how it is developed, and who is responsible for it. It is also one of the widely debated issues of accrediting and determining world class higher education institutions which could go a long way in systematically improving the performance of an institution as well as an individual. Most of the studies regarding employability have found lesser understanding of this concept especially in graduates who need to be well versed with the concept of employability as they are the force that ignite this notion and take it forward to the workplaces and to the employers they encounter during their careers. Though I have not yet selected a particular branch of law I would like to specialize in, I am confident that my interests, academics and experiences will allow me to succeed in any branch I choose. I also know that my holistic value as an individual, student and professional is not well represented by the results of a standardized test. As a law student, I intend to approach my studies with the same tenacity that earned me Honors, Dean’s List, and Magna Cum Laude distinctions, but also remain active in student affairs and help others succeed when possible.
...ineering with first-class honours is my ultimate academic goal. After that, I am planning to further my study in PhD and make a research about the microstructure. It is easy to set the target but to achieve it need a lot of work and sacrifice the time and money. Strategic planning and full preparation needed to make the dream come to reality. I always tell myself that I have a potential to reach the target, and it is not impossible for me. To motivate me, I do read articles about the successful people as it may give me an inspiration and encourage me to be like them or even more.
