The idea that emotions are the bases of learning is the foundation of emotional intelligence. The term Emotional intelligence was coined by psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey. It referred to the ability for an individual to observe, manage and assess their emotions. Put simply, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and control our own emotions and the emotions of other people. This involves an individual’s ability to successfully manage their emotions and also being able to correctly respond to emotions of others. Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in effective leadership because an emotionally intelligent leader possesses a positive outlook. A positive attitude is contagious and can motivate employees to perform better and be more productive, as compared to leaders who stress out employees. Therefore, emotional intelligence is very beneficial for effective leadership. Emotionally intelligent people are adaptable. They know when to be upbeat and they also know when to be empathic. They adjust their moods to what they are sensing from the people that they are leading and directing. The ability to do this is known as resonance. The resonant leader has team members that are synergistic with one another and with the leader. These leaders have the trust and confidence of their co workers and they can communicate effectively both up and down the chain of command. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, and understand emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, efficiently communicate, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and to defuse conflict. By harnessing emotional intelligence, we can modify our own behavior and our interaction with other people. By utilizing high emotional intelligence, we are able to recognize our won emotional state and the emotional states of others, and engage with others in a way that draws them nearer to you (Cherry, 2015).

Paul Hong author of “Emotional intelligence Goleman’s four competencies” says that emotional intelligence can be described as the ability to recognize and manage your own and others’ emotions, including the capacity to self motivate and handle interpersonal relationships.The novel Brave New World took out the main component in a human set up so there is no way to create a special bond with other humans.
The term Emotional Intelligence was phrased by Salovey and Mayer in 1990. Though research on intelligence had been carried out years before and the value of cognitive emotion was first studied by psychologists from as early as 1940. David Wechsler was one of the first pioneers who recognized the importance of non-cognitive aspects of humans and proposed that non-intellective abilities are essential for predicting one’s ability to succeed in life. Emotions are frequent companions in our lives. They come and go, and constantly change like the weather. They generate powerful chemicals that create positive and negative feelings, which have a powerful effect on leadership. Some emotions can either facilitate leadership, while others can detract from successful leadership. This course, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, has truly opened my eyes to the affects that emotions have on being an effective leader. Peter Salovey and John Mayer defined emotional intelligence as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (p. 5). This definition in itself states that emotions, whether it be ones own emotions or those of others, is the underlying factor that directs the actions of a leader. Therefore, throughout the progression (advancement) of this course, I have learned the importance of the development of emotional intelligence for being an effective leader, and because of this I plan on developing the capacities that contribute to being an emotionally intelligent leader for my own success, now and in the future.
Emotional Intelligence allows one to use their intelligence, empathy, and emotions to improve and heighten your gifts. Emotional Intelligence affects our personal performance in many ways. While it is true that we must have intelligence to get the job, we must be able to perceive, use, understand, and manage our emotions in order to perform to the best of our abilities. In addition, to controlling and using our emotions, we must also be able to understand and influence the emotions of others around us. As the information presented in this class has shown us our emotions including our moods play a vital role in the amount of effort we give and the work we do. Emotional Intelligence, also known as ‘EI’, is defined as the ability to recognize, authoritize and evaluate emotions. The ability to control and express our own emotions is very important but so is our ability to understand, interpret and respond to the emotions of others. To be emotionally intelligent one must be able to perceive emotions, reason with emotions, understand emotions and manage emotions.
An individual’s ability to control and express their emotions is just as important as his/her ability to respond, understand, and interpret the emotions of others. The ability to do both of these things is emotional intelligence, which, it has been argued, is just as important if not more important than IQ (Cassady & Eissa, 2011). Emotional intelligence refers to one’s ability to perceive emotions, control them, and evaluate them. While some psychologists argue that it is innate, others claim that it is possible to learn and strengthen it. Academically, it has been referred to as social intelligence sub-set. This involves an individual’s ability to monitor their emotions and feelings, as well as those of others, and to differentiate them in a manner that allows the individuals to integrate them in their actions and thoughts (Cassady & Eissa, 2011).
Emotional intelligence: This is most difficult concept to understand and master. This is the ability of the individual to manage the emotions of their own and of others. It can also be termed as “steer smarts” which is mostly possessed by executives of the company in order to maintain the relationship within the company as well as with the stakeholders.
