According to Bradberry and Greaves, emotional intelligence is “your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships” (pg. 17). Emotional intelligence has two main competencies; 1) personal: pertains to self-awareness and management, and 2) social: relates to the observation and interaction with others. The competencies consist of four domains; 1) self-awareness: recognizing your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior, 2) self-management: one’s ability to control impulsive feelings and behavior, 3) social-awareness: understanding and picking up on emotional cues of others, and 4) relationship-management: …show more content…

24). Furthermore, “getting to know yourself inside and out” consequently “knowing yourself as you really are and becoming more and more comfortable with the true essence of you” (pg. 61). According to the appraisal, I have not taken the necessary time to notice and remain mindful of my emotions as they happen, to include how I response during particular situations or interact with certain people. While I have self-confidence, I lack accurate self-assessment, and emotional self-awareness. These weaknesses are exposed in my score of 78 in the self-awareness domain. Self-confidence has been a strength of mine from an early age. I have faced numerous assignments of great difficulty, yet embraced the challenge. However, I do not know my limitations, welcome constructive criticism, or know when to ask for help. I have a horrible habit of thinking I can do everything myself and actually trying too. Thus, I have to stop and ask myself why I do the things I do. Why do I not know my limitations or ask for help? Is it because I do not have the courage to be honest with myself or trust others? Why do I not seek positive feedback? Am I self-conscious of what I may hear? Nonetheless, to answer these questions and accurately assess myself I have to become aware of my behaviors. Thus, I will have to watch myself like a hawk to accurately assess my behavior and more importantly seek feedback from others. I have to learn that feedback is not an attack and it will help me grow. Until the assessment, I ignored the things I did, said, thought or felt about certain situations. It’s almost as if, I went through the motions to accomplish a task but never was mindful of my actions. Despite being attuned with my values, I’m not attuned with how my feelings affect me or my job performance. Hence, the
