The Emotional Impact of Cell Phones on Teens

People have cell phones everywhere, especially teenagers. Teenagers are glued to their cell phones; they need cell phones almost everywhere they go. Today teens are depending on their phones for everything. The number of cell phones users has increased and as of 2010, there were more than 303 million subscribers in the U.S., according to the cellular companies (Hanna). As a result of teenagers over using cell phones, teens are being impacted emotionally, socially, and physically. One way that teens are being impacted by over using their cell phones is emotionally. A study by Adriana Bianchi, and James G. Phillips showed the more teens use their phones the more likely they are to be anxious, depressed, and have a low self-esteem (“Center on Media and Child Health”). In a study conducted by Thomee, researchers found that cell phones use caused mental health problems for young adults. Both males and females were affected emotionally. For the men in the study, heavy cell phone use caused sleep problems and for the women, it caused depression. Teens are using phones more often than in the past which is leading to more emotional problems. Jacob Barkley, associate professor at Kent State University, found that students spent almost 5 hours a day using their cell phones and sent about 77 text messages. He also found that the more students used their cell phones the more anxious they became because they felt pressured to stay constantly connected to social networks (“Avid Cell Phone Users Suffer Anxiety: Study”). As teenagers use their phones more often, may cause more anxiety and other emotional problems. Another way teens are being impacted by using cell phones is socially.
