Aristotle proclaimed the idea that those with tendencies towards brilliance also have tendencies towards mental illness. Geniuses, as we call them, see the world differently than average people. Sir Isaac Newton invented calculus on a dare about why the planets travel in ellipses, while “[suffering] from extreme paranoia.” Although brilliance and mental illness correlate, Gottfried Leibniz invented calculus independently from Newton, proving mental illness is not a requirement for brilliance and vice versa. One out of four people suffer from mental illnesses. Although only one in every five teenagers has a mental illness, suicide is the third leading cause of death amongst teenagers. NHS estimates that 90% of death by suicide cases correlate or caused by mental illnesses. Seeing your bones, shredded muscle, whatever your extreme pain is, you must go find help to receive proper care for your wound immediately from a doctor. A band-aid and some ointment provide no help for the hand that went through a meat grinder. In our society, with twenty-five percent experiencing a mental illness, only forty percent of that twenty-five percent will seek out professional mental help (so ten percent of the original population receives help). This lack of people seeking out professional help demands the question, when does one seek out mental health professionals? Signs of avulsions include an increase of hopelessness and despair. If emotional pain interferes with regularly conducting life and coping methods render ineffective, then it would be helpful to see a mental health professional. If thoughts have turned to “harming yourself or others,” then help must be sought out immediately from an emergency room or a mental health
With all respect to the esteemed author and his colleague, this is a load of crap. Mental illnesses develop in relation to a variety of factors, including biochemical, environmental, and psychological. Placing all the blame on a method of entertainment makes no sense, akin to the fallacy that rock music causes cardiovascular difficulties. In addition, these statements center responsibility for such conditions on the individuals themselves, criticizing their intellectual capacities and communication abilities as well as media preferences. According to NAMI, one-half of all mental illness starts at the age of fourteen and increases to three-quarters by the age of twenty-four. Those that experience self-stigma have a lack of positive self-esteem and tend to blame themselves for they way they are feeling or behaving. “Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior” (Mayo Clinic). Mental disorders can happen many times through one’s life, but mental illness is classified as an ongoing problem with the symptoms that can affect the ability to perform normal day to day tasks (Mayo Clinic). Many people look at those afflicted with mental disorders as being crazy or clinically insane, while the reality is a problem many people live with on a daily basis with help from medications, psychologist visits, family, friends, help groups, and many other support systems. The lack of support available to mentally ill patients, the more that will refuse treatment and refuse to find help for their disorders. Many people who were born with mental disorders grow up knowing they have a problem, but people who develop them later in age don’t understand how to cope with it.

Ignoring the significant benefits that laughter causes in our lives, we dismiss the times we laugh. Those benefits have been studied since 1979 when Norman Causin, a pioneer in this field, wrote ‘‘Anatomy of an Illness’’ a book where he narrates his experience about how he used humor (laughter) and a positive attitude to relieve his own pain from his medical condition. Recently, a popular TV series “13 Reasons Why,” raised the awareness of suicide and mental health. Suicide and mental health are big deals, since suicide is the “second leading cause of death for ages 12-24,” according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (“Suicide Statistics”). People attempt suicide for various reasons, and mental illness is a significant factor. Consequently, risk factors such as chemical imbalance in the brain, genetic vulnerability, environmental factors, and family relationship intertwine and cause mental illness. In our world today, we have a generally poor understanding of mental illness in two distinct ways: we don´t understand the dangers that mental illness can present to people as they go about their everyday lives, and we don´t understand how to properly care for people that suffer from mental illness. However, if we better understand when, why, and how mentally ill people can become violent, and if we can better understand how to identify and treat the illnesses these people suffer from, we can drastically improve the lives of many people.
When I was younger, I once heard of someone harming themselves because they were sad and my immediate thought was, “Why would anyone ever hurt themselves on purpose? Can they not just find something that will make them happy?” I did not know or understand that there were such things as mental illnesses, much like heaps other people do not. People are also not aware of the many signs of mental illnesses, or even that the illnesses themselves exist. There are tons mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and much more. A large amount of these illnesses go untreated or unnoticed because people are not very well educated on them or simply think that since they cannot always be seen, they must not be serious. Mental illnesses are as real and severe as other illnesses, and require treatment in the form of therapeutic means or medications to recover.
So with this the number for mental health and suicide is much higher then what is reported. Mental health is a worldwide issue that no one understands and an issue that In the article Issues and Controversies says, "Throughout most of human history, people with mental illness were ostracized, isolated, and persecuted. " ( Infobase,1) This belief system can give causation of mental illness in different cultures and such influences in a community will always be in a negative manner. Various societies struggle with the notion of mental health.
Mental health can be seen as a continuum where illnesses are defined as patterns of behaviour that cause psychological suffering, distress and disability preventing adequate functioning with the potential of risk of harm to the self or others (Martins-Mourao, 2010, p. 92).
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.

Albert Camus’ theory of suicide as an existentialist reconceptualization provides insights on mental illness and the threat of suicide. This theory proposes, that anyone who has committed suicide or attempted suicide, results in the error that is related to mental disorder and irrationality (Roberts 2014:874). This theory, helps better understand the contribution of mental illness and suicide. Camus offers that there are many causes to suicide but the reasons we think to be the most general or obvious were not the ones that were most compelling (Roberts 2014:875).
