The emergence of capitalism in Western Europe was considered as a majority change in human history. As prior to the emergence of capitalism conditions are mainly agriculture and there was no sustained monotonic income per capita. Also prior to the emergence of capitalism there was a feudal system of organising the economy emerged in the 15th century of medieval Europe. Early Feudalism started after the fall of the Roman Empire, which led to no law being in place protecting the poor people who then turned to the lord of the manor for protection which saw the beginning of Feudalism. These factors gave Europe an advantage compared to other parts of the world, which allow capitalism to begin in Europe and spread across the world. However these were not the only aspects that saw the emergence of capitalism, there were also other coalescence events hat also saw the emergence of capitalism such as itinerant merchants, who were merchants that traveled long distances to sell good town to town. Itinerant merchants bought commerce and commercial intercourse to Europe which had sunk to trade less memorial stagnation, also allowed economic interdependence to form. They did not have an economic function, as slaves were not treated as workers, guild masters were not capitalist and the lord was not the landlord as slaves who were peasants or serfs and were subjects to ties and bonds discussed in the ownership. Whereas in the market economy factors of productions have economic functions and workers are not slaves but are free worker, able to end their dues when their work time is up. The Feudal system ideas of wage labor worked differently; as a lord would give shelter to the peasant in return the peasant would pay him back in crops and not do anything without his permission. Throughout the 19th century, capitalism seemed like an economic utopia for some, but on the other hand some saw it as a troublesome whirlpool that would lead to bigger problems. The development of capitalism in popular countries such as in England brought the idea that the supply and demand exchange systems could work in most trade based countries. Other countries such as Russia thought that the proletariats and bourgeoisie could not co-exist with demand for power and land, and eventually resorted to communism in the early 20th century. Although many different systems were available to the countries in need of economic change, a majority of them found the right system for their needs. And when capitalist societies began to take full swing, some classes did not benefit as well as others and this resulted in a vast amount of proletariats looking for work. Capitalists societies are for certain a win-loss system, and many people did not like the change from having there society changed to a government controlled money hungry system. On the other hand, the demand for labor brought the bourgeoisie large profits because they could pay out as much as they wanted for labor.

The exact origin of capitalism is unknown and to precisely trace its inception is, as Joyce Appleby says, a conundrum in itself. However, speculation negating the inevitability of capitalism is an even greater feat and rather fruitless. Appleby’s research and evidence thus far, support a great part of her assumptions retracing the colorful history of capitalism, though her case against its inevitability falls short. The question at hand is whether she provides a compelling case, the answer is yes. However, compelling is not convincing and one must be convinced to provide legitimate support of their argument. Human nature is ingrained within us all and its traits inevitably materialize during the course of our growth as we mature, increase our capacity for intelligence and more importantly, develop our autonomous ability to apply the intelligence that we have accumulated. Thus, the question is a deeper one and the argument is whether aspects of capitalism are really part of our human nature despite a culture that oppresses or conversely, nurtures us. Therefore, I disagree with Appleby’s assumption and submit that there is an existence of inevitability related to the emergence of capitalism.

With the banking system wanting in on the trade they created a service, which would lend money to anybody wanting to get in on the trade. With more people getting in on the trade it allowed certain individuals to become wealthier if they invested their money right. In addition to a wealthy population some individuals started investing their money together known as joint-stock companies. This allowed them to start larger projects with less risk. As certain individuals start to reap all the money flowing into Europe we start to see capitalism emerge. In distinction to the commercial revolution we started to see inflation occur. An increase in prices accompanied by a fall in the purchasing value of money. We then start seeing aristocracy fall apart. They can’t keep up with wages so they start to sell of their estates and the ones that can buy it are the rich middle class merchants. With the inflation causing widespread issues the rich were not that affected by it. But for the poor it was insurmountable.
