The Great Elephants African elephants are the largest land animals in the world. They are slightly bigger than their cousin the Asian elephant. Elephants are known for a lot of things. There are only 2 out of the 600 species of elephants left. They do some of the most interesting things. In this essay, I’m going to inform you about different things about elephants; how they live, how they do things and where they are most commonly found. They are the main attraction of the culture. Elephants in Asia help construct things for people. They help by carrying things from one place to the other or holding things for an extended amount of time. They act as machines. They live in matriarchies, it consists of mothers, daughters and baby elephants working together to survive. They can develop feelings and when they lose an elephant, they mourn for their loss. They often revisit the bones of an elephant they lost and touch it with their trunks. They also have a good memory so that helps them remember where food is. It also comes in hand when they have seen hunters or poachers so they know not to go in that specific place. Due to them being hunted or poached, that’s another leading factor to early death. They do not eat any meat. They strictly eat greens. They do not sleep a lot so they’re always on the move. They walk great distances looking for the amount of food their body requires. Elephants also communicate different than other animals. They communicate by their trunks or they make powerful, but quiet rumbles to communicate over long distances. They don’t bathe everyday but when they do, they find a river and go soak for a while, they often treat the river like a waterpark and they have fun in the water. They take mud baths to clear their skin of bugs and ticks. They also protect their skin from the sun. When elephants give birth, it’s very serious to them. They are pregnant for 22 months. One baby elephant is referred to as a calf. At birth, a calf weighs 200 pounds and stands at about 3 ft. tall. Another thing about elephants, is that they rarely get sick. If elephants get sick, they never get a stuffy trunk like we get a stuffy nose. If they did have a stuffy trunk, they would blow the mucus right out of it. If elephants live in a zoo, the keepers, notice a difference in their stools. They are trained to know if an elephant is sick just by looking their stools.
