Thanksgiving is a day filled with family, friends, food and, of course, thanks, so for this thanksgiving, I couldn’t think of a better way to appreciate my family than cut out all distractions from the digital world. I attempted to disconnect myself from all digital devices, but I found it extremely difficult. I had trouble from the moment I woke up until late that night when I finally reconnected. However, throughout my time away from technology, I realized how much the world and I personally depend on digital devices for psychological comfort, as well as the difference in technology use among age groups.
The first thing I did in the morning was use my phone, without even realizing that I was supposed to disconnect that day. I shut off my alarm, and texted my boyfriend. Per usual, I had snoozed the alarm a significant amount and was already running late to go to my grandparents’ house, so I texted the most significant people in my life that I wasn’t going to see today and told them I would talk to them later that night. Already, I could see the effect of disconnecting. Before I turned off my phone, I felt the need to text my friends to apologize and notify them about not being able to talk for a day. The New York Times article, “Hit the Reset Button in Your Brain” finally made sense. Author, Daniel J. Levitin, writes about when people take a break from technology, “many of us will feel guilty for doing so. We will worry about all of the emails piling up at work” (Levitin). I realized this feeling of guiltiness that I felt was a side-effect of being overly invested in digital technology and the comfort it gave me.
After finally shutting off my phone, everything went rather smoothly and disconnected, aside from the casual glance ...

...ages “Happy Thanksgiving”, and then everyone else responded. Although, the gesture is nice, why did it feel necessary? It wouldn’t have affected me either way if these people wished me a happy thanksgiving, but maybe those messages were just their personal way of feeling alone together. Overall, all of this missed content on my phone actually didn’t matter. When I scrolled through social media feeds, it all seemed so pointless. There were tons of pictures of thanksgiving meals that looked almost identical to my own. At the end of the day, I was thankful for being able to take a break from technology, and I would definitely consider doing it again. I realized how much I could connect with other people and how relaxing it was to not be constantly flooded with distractions. Perhaps the whole human race should try this experiment. It was definitely a learning experience.
