1. Individual, Group, and/or Family Psychotherapy: Three Types
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on addressing a person's current thoughts and behaviors about himself. Either in group or individual settings, therapists help people learn to identify distorted or negative thinking about eating and self-image. They learn to recognize and change faulty beliefs, to relate better to others and change the way they do it. CBT can help cope better with triggers such as depressed mood or negative self-image. It helps focus on how to solve current problems. A tailored CBT approach may be more effective when combined with weight-loss counseling.
Interpersonal psychotherapy focuses on how you currently relate to other people. It helps you face and heal current broken relationships. Improving interpersonal skills may help reduce binge eating triggered by unhealthy ways of communicating.
Dialectical behavior therapy can help reduce the desire to binge eat by helping you learn to manage your emotions, cope with stress and improve your relationships.
2. Medical Care and Monitoring
There are no drug or surgical treatments for binge eating disorder. However, addressing the weight issue and abnormalities of obesity are sometimes a necessary part of an effective treatment plan when they become life-threatening, as is addressing accompanying depression and suicidal thoughts.

8. Self Help Strategies
There are many different strategies for self help. Some people with binge eating disorder find support groups, videos, or self-help manuals used with or without guidance from a mental health expert helpful. However, they may still need help with medications or psychotherapy.
Change Panda and Recovery International are two very different organizations that offer structured, guided self-help. Change Panda is an online program. Award winning Recovery International is mainly an in-person support group, but they also offer online and telephone meetings.
12 Step programs such as Overeaters Anonymous, Emotions Anonymous, and Co-dependents Anonymous also are helpful.
