Review of My Research
Wars inflict a lot of damage onto soldiers, both physically and mentally. One of the most well known wars is The Vietnam War. This war negatively impacted the men who fought in the war, because it was very intense during and after the fight. Soldiers that fought in the war, were left with a lot of stressful memories. In addition they were dealt permanent damage to their brain and body parts. The Vietnam War was very gruesome, it involved a lot of very disturbing events such as the massacre of village communities and torture. Due to being exposed to such horrifying moments while fighting, most veterans from the war acquired post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Vietnam veterans also had a difficult time adjusting back to their normal lives because they had to leave their jobs to go to the war. In addition, they struggled to live normally because they had to deal with physical and psychological damage. The damage to their body made them start to live a different life style. For some soldiers they had simply lost a limb whereas others had larger issues to deal with, such as living PTSD. Living with something as stressful as PTSD led many men to become addicted to either drugs or alcohol. Drugs and alcohol were a great reliever for veterans as it gave them a temporarily alleviated some of the stress from their lives. It was necessary for many to use drugs and alcohol because it was nearly impossible for them to forget about all the terrifying experiences that were ingrained in their minds. The after effects of the war impacted each person differently. There has been a lot of research and books produced to discuss the what soldiers experienced during and after the war. I will be looking at; “The Things They Carried”, a secondary source from the UCONN library database as well as a source from Stanford University, in order to get a better understanding of what these soldiers had to deal with
