The cigarette was invented in 1832 by an Egyptian artilleryman during the siege of Acre. The Egyptian 's crew had improved their rate of fire by rolling the gunpowder in paper tubes. For this, he and his crew were rewarded with a pound of tobacco. Their pipe was broken, so they began to roll the pipe tobacco in paper tubes. They decided that they could roll up the tobacco in paper and smoke the tobacco that way. However, tobacco was first introduced in the Americas through the confederate states when it was given to the confederate soldiers in the north during the civil war; and that is how it was introduced in the northern states as well. Nicotine therapy is given in numerous ways the patch, gum, lozenge, spray or inhaler. All of these varieties offer a cessation to smoking in different ways. You can wear the patch on the upper part of your body, you can inhale the spray through your nose, or you can chew the gum or take a lozenge throughout different times of the day. Doing nicotine therapy has proven very effective “ The nicotine therapy has proven effective increasing smoking cessation over 150% to 200%” (Diefenbach, Smith para 1). These numbers show how effective nicotine therapy really is. In the cigarette the amount of nicotine is controlled in the amount of nicotine in each cigarette. However, in therapy you are likely to get more nicotine the maximum being 4 mg if you were a heavy smoker meaning smoking 2 packs a day and have been a smoker for over 20 years. One of the problems were that many young people smoked cigarettes for weight control research shows that “There is a dose-response relationship between nicotine gum and weight gain: smokers who use more gum gain less weight” ( Dienfenbach,Smith para 2). This proves that nicotine therapy using gum can help you keep the weight off without you causing any physical harm to the body. However, as effective as the patch can be it also has many side effects that it can cause like headache, anxiety, dizziness, stomach upset, or nausea. These side effects also can lead to tremors, chest pains, or difficulty
