Americans are known for their larger than life attitude. It can be seen in almost everything, including their waistlines. Instead of questioning why Americas continue to become more obese, society has begun to accept our ever growing waste lines. Unfortunately larger waste lines do not only effect American adults, child obesity has become a major issue. Many people write child obesity off on laziness or on the overuse of consumer electronics such as cellphones and game consoles. I believe this to be inaccurate, rather than question what children are doing with their time we should be questioning what they are putting into their bodies. The fast food industry relentlessly markets to today’s youth with little to no care about the effect they are having on the health of its customers.
The Fast Food industry has become a staple in the American diet, data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that in 2011 the average American consumed nearly one ton of food. That’s 1996 pounds of food a year. This is because fast food has become the easiest option for many American’s. Not only is it faster than making a home cooked meal, it is much cheaper “the healthiest diets cost about $1.50 more per day than the least healthy diets, according to new research from Harvard School of Public Health” That’s an average saving of $547.50 a year (HSPH). But how does this effect child obesity? Children have little to no control of what goes into their body. Often when a parent decides that they rather save money they are unaware of the damage they are doing to their child’s health, “on days they eat fast food, children consume 126 additional calories and teens consume 310 more calories. ...re. Fast food has proven to be a highly addictive substance and the low prices only encourage the use of the product. By allowing marketing to children we are standing by as these corporations continue to create a generation of users. Some people may argue that these companies offer “healthy options” there for they cannot be responsible for the unhealthy choice you make. Unfortunately these so called “healthy options” offered often contain more calories than a Big Mack.
I personally believe these advertisements are becoming out of control, by focusing the market on children these companies are only indorsing things such as diabetes, high blood perisher, and child obesity. Some form of regulation needs to be established, this could be as simple as disallowing advertisement to anyone under the age of 10 or banning such advertisements from children programs and games.
