There are four main components to being a conscious communicator. Conscious communicators are mindful; they respect diversity, display awareness of communication as a process and require the balancing of strategy, ethics, and outcomes. As communication methods have advanced over the years technology has both positively and negatively affected our society. Society has now been consumed by the use of iPhone, emails, instant messengers, iPad, laptops, social media, and text messaging. Did life before technology require people to communicate effectively and become engaged? Are people allowing technology communication to intrude the boundaries of home with work? Have people become less engaged?
Before technology became demanding people engaged in more meaningful conversations with others. “We are creating and encouraging a culture of distraction when we are increasingly disconnected from the people and events around us and unable to engage in long form thinking.” (Kraus, 2012) A pew research study stated that people no longer get into detailed conversation. It seems that even at casual dinner with friends you will notice that soon everyone at the table is engaging in conversation on their cell phones. People consider the accessibility a form of multi-tasking. “Doing several things at one time curbs the ability to focus on one single task.” (Williams, 2005) The book, “The Tipping Point,” the author states that electronic tools have added to clutter in our lives. (Gladwell, 2002) He further concludes that “They interrupt our conversations and concentration; interfere with creative thinking, strategic thought, and in general force us to multitask. In recent years a majority of people believe that cell phones have drawn people away from the old traditional ways of going through life. The crazy thing is that those people are exactly right. The problem is that they are only seeing the negatives towards cell phones being a distraction. Technology has definitely changed the way things work around the world. Devices such as cell phones have enhanced the way we communicate, organize, and learn. In the article “In Defense of Distraction” by Sam Anderson, the main topic mentioned was that all the technology surrounding society distracts individuals from working efficiently. Michelle also became aware that over forty percent of people were suffering from anxiety when they were separated from the phones. This clearly shows that we are connected to the technology that we use, but we are also suffering from the use of technology. We spend more than half of our entire day using some sort of technology, whether that is a computer, phone, television, or radio. Technology is becoming a prevalent part of our lives, and we cannot live without it. Technology has become our family, and part of us.
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. Cellphones, television, and computers are just three of the most popular ways that we communicate in today. They have made a substantial impact on the United States simply by being readily available and easy to use. People are often discussing how technology has impacted us. Many believe that technology is actually hindering society rather than helping it. Then there are those who doubt technology has made our social interactions better. Certainly, this is true; without the advances in technology, our level of social interaction in education, businesses, and relationships would diminish.

One’s career, school life, and even socializing are affected by communication. If you do not know how to communicate, you probably do not have many friends. Communication has been used since the days of the cavemen. When the cavemen learned to communicate they greatly increased their hunting potential. When they learned to communicate on the hunt and before the hunt, they caught much more game then when they were just randomly running after the animals with spears. In school, if teachers and students could not communicate well, how would anything ever get done? In a business, communication is the most important ingredient. “We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
