There are plenty of sugary soft drinks in the market today. Sugary soft drinks are included as drinks defined by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Health and Human Services in their Dietary Guidelines for Americans as “sugar-sweetened beverages” that contain different types of sugars that contribute calories. Examples of these are lemonade, sports drinks, energy drinks, carbonated sodas and sweetened teas and coffees (Marrow,2011). Sugary soft drinks are analogous to junk food. Though sugary drinks are not the sole reason behind the obesity problem in the country, it is a significant contributor to the said problem. Similar to sugary drinks, junk food is also significant contributors to obesity among children, adolescents and adults. People make unhealthy choices in what they eat that is why they often choose junk food. Obesity as the studies show is a growing problem. Consumption of soft drinks has an impact on childhood obesity. According to France Ellisle from France’s Institute of Health and Medical Research, there is a direct connection between weight gain and sugar. The average adolescent is consuming about fifteen to twenty teaspoons of sugar daily. (Scott, 2) Along with the sugar children are eating more and more fast food. The sit down dinner has come to an end. In most families both parents work fulltime leaving little time to prepare healthy meals. Parents look for food that is quick, cheap and satisfies the child. The problem with fast food is that has very little nutritious value and is often high in fat and salt content, with a good measure of preservative thrown in....
Surveys have shown that sugar-sweetened beverages are the primary source of added sugar in our diets. According to a Coca-Cola history website, the soft-drinks’ bottle sizes have been enlarged drastically over the past 40 years, basically meaning that we are drinking more soft drinks than ever. As an example, half of the population in the US consume sugary drinks every day, in which about 25 percent gain at least 200 calories from these drinks. Sugary drinks are also the top calorie source in teen’s diets, increasing the risk of diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart problems from an early stage. It is a significant factor that leads to obesity, so I believe resisting these sugary drinks and promoting healthier products could definitely assist the goal of elevating the number of a healthy
Not all sugars are made the same. Sugar is naturally found in many foods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy. It is also an added ingredient in many processed foods like soups, condiments, and beverages. The sugars added to foods tend to be highly concentrated and devoid of other nutrients. In contrast, natural sugars are integrated into
You are out for a quiet lunch with your family, the waitress walks over and your 6 year old child asks for a lemonade with their lunch. Sure, you think one glass of soft drink won’t hurt right? Wrong. That one, seemingly innocent glass of lemonade contains a whopping 6 teaspoons of sugar. I doubt that you would let your child eat 6 teaspoons of sugar from a bowl, so why would you allow them to consume it in the form of a sugary soft drink? Sugar is highly addictive, can cause cancer and is causing childhood obesity. The proliferation of sugar in society is causing widespread problems like obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancers, tooth decay and acid wear. Additionally, Rethink Sugary Drink claims that one can of soft drink a day can lead to an annual
In the United States childhood obesity has more than tripled since 1970 (National Diabetes). Now one in five children are considered obese. Are we going to stay on this upward trend? Obesity is caused when too much energy, in the form of fats and sugars are consumed. With the combination of minimal physical activity, down the road, this can lead to horrible health problems. One of the main sources of sugar in a typical diet is soda and energy drinks. The consumption of these addicting drinks needs to be carefully monitored because they contain large amounts of sugar. The USA must implement a Nationwide Soda tax on all sugary drinks that don’t provide a substantial amount of nutrients.
Ever since the introduction of sugar-sweetened beverages back in the late 1800s, intake of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased around the globe. For example, between 1999 and 2006, intake of these beverages has doubled in Mexico across all age groups (Barquera 2008). As well as in the United States, between 1977 and 2002, the intake of caloric beverages per capita doubled across all age group (Duffey 2002). The obesity epidemic has brought the attention of public health measures to prevent diet related diseases. “Sugar-sweetened beverages (soda sweetened with sugar, corn syrup, or other caloric sweeteners and other carbonated and [non-]carbonated drinks, such as sports and energy drinks) may be the single largest driver of the obesity
Though parents and guardians play a large role in teaching children healthy eating habits, kids are kids, and they will want to eat junk food if they have unfettered access to it. A shocking statistic reveals that soft drink consumption accounts for one third of added sugar intake in the US diet (Krebs, Himes, et al). In one study of fourth-grade and fifth-grade children, sweetened beverages constituted 51% of the average daily intake of beverages consumed. This large intake of sweetened beverages could contribute to increased energy intake, tilting the energy balance toward excessive weight gain (Krebs, Himes, et
There has been an ever-increasing concern on obesity and overall health especially towards the next generation. There has been a steady increase in obesity from “2003 to 2014 with men obesity and overweight rate rising from 57.3 percent to 61.8 percent and woman 41.3 percent to 46.2 percent” (Ferrers, 2015). Due to this many scientist and the World Health Organization has proposed a tax on all junk food such as fast food and soda. Some people say that it is useless and won’t help while others are completely for it. There are four main concerns when deciding if we should impose this tax or not:
One contributing factor of obesity today is pop or soda. Sugar drinks are a problem for many people. Both children and adults have to pay attention to what they drink. As adults, we have to set an example for our young children of what is right and wrong. Sugar drinks are high in sugar and have many empty calories. The calories are not the type that fills you up like food. An individual can of soda may contain around 150 calories (Harvard.edu). Soda is also not the only dri...
The authority of sugary drinks becomes a growing problem everyday. Almost twenty percent of U.S. children and teens are overweight. But, there are ways to stop the obesity problem in the U.S. One way that we can stop the problem with obesity is to eliminate major soft, sugary drinks in schools in general. Bullying is an important thing that needs to stop, but with children and teens who are obese are struggling with being bullied. The bullying makes these children and teens are most likely to suffer from depression, lower their self-esteem, and make them antisocial. If schools do stop offering the major soft sugary drinks in schools, then it can help the children and teens to have a lower risk of developing different types of disease as they
When a person is deciding what to eat and drink, they must always look at how it will affect them, regardless of how good it tastes. Every food is filled with things that are good and bad. Soft drinks are the most consumed beverage in the world today. Unfortunately, soft drinks are extremely toxic. Whether soft drinks satisfy thirst and taste good, this should not be a good enough reason to drink it. We should all do our bodies a favor and stop drinking soda.
A stereotypical American meal is a cheeseburger; fries; and a crisp, bubbly, large Coca-Cola. This classic is a meal with 86 grams of sugar, and that’s before you add in the burger and fries. It is no wonder America is known for obesity when people look at the drink choices. The average American was estimated to drink 168 liters of soft drinks in 2011, while the UK drank 57 liters per person and China drank a little under 11 liters per person. Areas that have lower consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks, such as South East Asia, are also areas that have the lowest obesity rate. While there is no proof that the low obesity rates are caused by drink less sugary drinks instead of other dietary choice, it is reasonable to conclude that low consumption
When I was a kid, I loved running down to the convenience store with my friends to grab a Pepsi or Coke. My childhood was compromised of the satisfaction of playing for hours on end outside and at the end of the day sitting around with friends drinking sodas and eating random snacks. As kids, no one thinks about the health complications involved with what we eat or drink because…it just doesn’t seem to matter then. The older and maturer we become, the more we start to over analyze and critique the amount and types of food we put into our bodies. Drinking beverages of any sort is a very important aspect to everyone 's life and can even be a bonding experience. For Americans, sugary drinks seem to be a very important aspect when eating any meal throughout the day. Many people seem to think that adding an excise tax will solve the big
