College can be a stressful time in any young adult 's life. Trying to juggle family, friends, and school work, while trying to figure out the rest of a person life can bring on anxiety.
Anxiety can be brought on by nervousness, apprehension, worry, or an unsettling feeling one may have. Everyone experiences anxiety in their lifetime, today there are nearly three million cases reported per year. Whether it has to do with paying the bills on time, a big exam coming up, or even making an appointment. Anxiety can range from, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many people can experience symptoms such as: “feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness, problems sleeping, cold or sweaty hands or feet, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, not being able to be still and calm, dry mouth, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, nausea, muscle tension, and dizziness” (Anxiety & Panic Disorders Health Center). In my situation I suffer from severe panic attacks, the feeling overwhelms my entire body, the world seems to shrink to the point where it is suffocating me, and all I can do is cry while the feeling of hopelessness consumes my thoughts. Everyone experiences anxiety differently, it can be a traumatic encounter nonetheless experiencing it in a foreign place such as college.
When entering college one can experience many new obstacles that can bring on anxiety. Making new friends, finding a good balance between work and going out, and dealing with the immense amount of work can be overwhelming, causing many young college students to experience stress and anxiety. Anxiety is a hard condition to cope with no matter how severe it may be, it can consume a person 's life especially in college. The everyday struggle of college can be hard for anyone allowing anxiety to creep into one 's life without them even realizing it until it is too late. However, to cope with anxiety exercise and being outside can help reduce the stress. Whether it be going for a run, joining a Zumba class, or even lifting weights, exercise can help release endorphins into one 's body which results in lowering the feeling of stress and anxiety. I myself noticed an immediate increase in positivity once working out, and now it has become a regular activity I chose to partake in.
