The chief academic officer Dr. Jacqueline McCray here at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is very concerned about the major causes and effects of stress on college students here at UAPB. It is a fact, that administrators at colleges all over the nation have some of the same type of concerns. “Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.” according to Oxforddictionaries.com. This means stress can be very dangerous to the student and potentially to all those around them. For a number of students stress is the main cause of most of the issues they face including their emotional and physical well-being. The reasons behind their stress vary because for one student stress might be academic, whereas for others it might be money, competition, relationships, drugs, bullying or even food issues. Living with stress is norm for a lot of busy student’s joggling school, work and families. If students are not able to work out these issues the effect of this stress may lead to many negative things including depression or suicide. College should be a learning, fun, networking and carefree time not suicidal period of a student’s life. In order to have a more positive experience the focus of students, faculty, and staff including the chancellor must be to find a way to help all students deal with stress in order to have a more positive college experience.

Research say that if students are struggling or someone you know seems to be struggling with stress that obviously is affecting or impairing their capability to function on a daily basis you should help them to seek professional help. This could mean seeing a health professional, spiritual advisor, counselor, family member, or teacher. Whatever you do to help is needed because they may not see the signs themselves and you might just save their life. My suggestion is to have fun and make friends because these things are great stress releasers as long as your respect you educational endeavors. It cannot be stress enough about the significance of the effect of stress on college students.
