This means stress can be very dangerous to the student and potentially to all those around them. It can affect anyone and it can affect them in many different ways. Stress is not always bad for us. Some people feel they work best when pressed and stressed. If some of us didn’t have stress we would procrastinate constantly and not accomplish much in life. It can be both beneficial and driving when we need to get things done. Bad stress can cause a normally health person to be forced to take legal or illegal medication to overcome or suppress stress. This is true especially for students who are not organized and far away from their family. There has to be the right balance of stress that helps us to do things we might not want to do. Stress can move us forward as students. We know that too much stress is not good for students and it keeps them from having a positive college experience. Sometimes instead of pushing students to get things done it makes them shut down. This is especially true for student who have had parents and family members who steps in a paid for things or did things for them before they the feel sickening feeling stress can cause. These are the students we often consider privileged or just spoiled. They feel it the most because stress is all brand new for them. Many of them have said they feel stressed because they are away from their support system and thrown out into a world that expects them to do things that someone else has always done. One of the first stressors that come to most people’s mind is academic. Student academic stress is at an all-time high for students everywhere. Just preparing and getting into the college of your choice is just the being of the stress. Besides that, high school and college work is completely different in terms of amount and quality required. Stress can easily come with learning new ways to do things. Change in itself is a challenges and stressors for some people. College assignments can put an enormous amount of pressure on us but we still must do whatever it takes to be successful. The frightening fear of flunking out is factual. Kirsten Schuder, a Mental Health Professional and associate from Press and MTVU conducted a survey in 2008 that said, “More than half of students (60%) reported that severe stress interfered with their ability to complete their schoolwork more often than once, and that this statistic reflects an increase from 2008.” In terms of academic students face stressors in college with course work plus testing. We have weekly or regular testing, midterm and finals. After all this testing, most of us have the stress of preparing to test in order to gain a license for the field of study that we plan to enter. These fields might include teaching, social work, nursing and many other areas. Testing puts a lot of pressure on students to do well in every course.

These students need more help from their college to help themselves overcome the emotional demands. The schools must have programs that helps students become more prepared for college and after graduation. These students must think independently, act more independently, and navigate the world more independently. The college must find ways to help students help motivate themselves. Everyone has experienced some type of stress in their life. Whether it has been from work, school, or trouble at home, stress is stress. If anyone had played sports in high school, you know the challenge of balancing school and sports. Imagine that stress, then multiply it exponentially. Everyone knows that college is a much more rigorous version of high school.
Stress affects everyone. But it also affects each individual differently. Managing the amount of stress an individual can handle comes with experience of the subject under pressure. Without proper management of stress, symptoms that affect the entire body and mind can not only start as little issues but become chronic disorders that affect an individual for a lifetime. College students, especially freshmen, experiencing stress is normal, but it a concern that should not be taken lightly. It is easy for situations to spiral out of control, or for freshmen to feel like they cannot complete the next four years if things stay the same. Stress can come from any event or thought that makes us feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. All of us experience stress and usually cope with it well. Stress is an omnipresent part of life and is a reaction to external stimuli that disturb our physical or mental equilibrium. It is a system in our body that helps us to deal with real danger and / or perform at our best. Any event or happening that induces stress is called stressor.
Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress. Along the same lines, stress can overpower a student because of the new lifestyle that a college student has to adapt and maintain. Many students can risk physical, mental, and depression while being stress, I believe that stress could cause depression because while the student may be in poverty it can add up from the stress of school. They’re in pressure to be good enough to have a better and brighter future for their family members. Some schools may provide programs to help with depression for example, counseling/therapy or probably ask for advice from a close friend that can relate to poverty and stress
Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.
Stress has various effects on the body, both psychological and physiological. Stress can have positive effects on the body and can be beneficial, but frequent stress will eventually cause negative effects on the body.
Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. At school this may lead to poor attendance, a significant drop in grades or even annoyance with schoolwork, in a good student. As a high school student, high school in general is very stressful, but not only am I high school student I am also a college student. Double the responsibility means double the stress.
