Decades previous in the United States, “gay” establishments, bars and clubs, were prohibited from being in operation, to prevent the formation of open gay communities. These businesses were thus often run illegally and when discovered were subject police violence, this mentality has continued since and patrons and establishments seldom operate unmolested. Atwood’s presentation of “the club” (1986, p. 237) in the Handmaid’s Tale is a male sanctuary, devoid of “nicotine-and-alcohol taboos” (p. 238) and filled indentured women available for sexual proclivities of the patrons which is interpreted as both an extreme luxury and deviation from the conservative religious based government. This foil of Atwood’s conservative culture is a private version similar to the more open “runs” (1984, p. 293), voluntary sex establishments integrated into Velmian society for various sexual tendencies. This casual establishment differs from the more secretive “club” presented by Atwood, having only “ordinances” (1986, p. 293) against forced participation in the “runs” of Velm. Delany also alludes that this is not the standard across the worlds as RAT Korga, former slave and world survivor, stated that on Rhyonon, his home world, they were illegal. As “runs” for “just males” were always shut down and “ones for men and women stayed around much longer” (1984, p. 293) this is a stark difference to Velm with it’s required “three different kinds” (1984, p. 293) for a single neighborhood. Next, we will evaluate RCT’s assumptions to determine its relevance to the core values of social work. Finally, we will determine the ways RCT can best guide social work practice.
In today’s society there are many words that are used or said without giving it complete thought. For example, the word “identity” is something to which I have never really given much thought or even considered how I identify myself.
Ethnography is a research method used to explore different cultures from a personal view. Many anthropologists have sought to use ethnography as their main study method because of its specificity and opportunity to get hands on. Those that participate in ethnographies are expected to accurately record detailed accounts of the society in which they are staying, but at the same time maintain a critical distance.
Sociocultural psychology began with Lev Vygotsky in 1931 in dealing with how people react to their environments, pressures, and influences that surround the individual in everyday life. This is a slowly expanding approach that is working towards treating psychological diseases such as obsessive compulsive disorder, also commonly known as OCD.Social psychology focuses mainly on how people react to their surroundings and others in society. Many psychologists go about treating illnesses, such as OCD and eating disorders, by placing people into situations where they have to confront their problems. Many psychologists such as Solomon Asch and Stanley Milgram performed experiments to observe how people react to surroundings and pressures.
Children’s behaviour is constantly changing and evolving as they learn about themselves and construct their own identities within different environments. The sociocultural theory acknowledges that social interactions are central to these continuous changes in thoughts and behaviour, varying significantly from one culture to the next. The key focus of this essay is to determine what behaviour is, with the consideration that behaviour is a socio-cultural construct and whether "Children’s capacity to choose appropriate behaviour is influenced by their developmental ability, temperament, interactions, life experiences and environmental factors” (Government of South Australia, 2004).
When it comes to anthropological theories, it is hard to prove or disprove them because everyone has different experiences in their lives within their different cultures that contribute to their opinion on that theory. I believe this is true with the theory of cultural relativism. My experiences within my own culture and the beliefs of my culture have led me to both agree and disagree with different aspects, or lack thereof, of cultural relativism. I believe there exists a duality within the theory of cultural relativism, a duality that I am familiar with and that has become a significant part of my culture. I am from the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The “Twin Cities” refers to Minneapolis and St. Paul. Only divided by a river (or in some cases, just a street), these cities are of equal, yet different importance in Minnesota culture. My experiences spending time in the two cities have led me to live in duel cultures. While many people live in a duality of cultures through their ethnicity, I identify with duel cultures based on geography. My experiences in both Minneapolis and St. Paul contribute to my ambivalence regarding cultural relativism. In Anthropology, there is a gray area when it comes to generalizing about cultures, because we all come from different ones. The idea of duality is a familiar one with which I can apply to my own life and my own culture, as well as to the well-known anthropological theory that tries to find an answer to the question of what culture is.
When linking the concept of cultural relativism to architecture, one would realize that both these components depend on each other. One cannot exist without the other (Kohler, 2003). Kohler remarks that in order for architecture to be progressive, The transfer and acceptance of technologies and techniques has to be based on a sound knowledge of regional culture (Kohler, 2003). In other words, the existing architecture or urban environment has to distinguish the features of regional diversity. Cultural exchange must consider the environment. No clash exists between regional and environmental appropriate construction techniques (Kohler, 2003). This is so because traditional architecture has adopted economic and environmental solutions. Conflict can only exist if one considers the ‘international style’ that has popularized the modern era with its high resource consumption. Kohler (2003) also stresses that there should be no regional cultural boundaries in order for architecture to be progressive (Kohler, 2003:86)
Recognizing the influence of culture is an important aspect for social workers when working with diverse populations. The client is a 30-year-old single African-American (AA) single woman with a child. Culture identifies a set of values and beliefs in a community and its corresponding worldview. As the AA culture has been forced to assimilate into the dominant culture, their own culture has been slowly forgotten. The client has deep roots to her ancestors and has mainstreamed into a new dimension. The client is reconnecting with her Baptist faith as she has lost the support from spiritual leaders. “African-Americans have developed abilities and coping mechanisms to deal with racism, and they rely on their social systems that have been perfected over the generations” (Marsiglia & Kulis, 2009, p. 187). The client represents a very diverse cultural group and the intersection of social class and gender which contributes to her oppression. The client is a single AA female with a son, living in poverty, lack of education, unemployed, with a felony charge, and receiving cash assistance from the state to support her son.
There are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture as an individual versus culture in your family, or even within your community. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs.

Ethics is defined as a study that deals with what behavior is considered to be, good or bad. Ethics is about doing what is right for other people throughout society (Kraft). “Western culture, Western civilization (the modern culture of western Europe and North America)” (Princeton University). The definition of western culture is broad and can be applied to many different aspects of life. In the world of health care, western culture prevails when discussing end of life situations. The main focus of western communication in these situations is keeping trust between patients directly and communicating the situation with them in a clear but respectful manner (Hawryluck). According to the National Health Service in the United Kingdom most health and social care staff have received some basic, generic communication skills training for end of life communication. However seeing as end of life situations are one of the most intense and demanding situation of a health care professionals career to deal with, “most believe they would benefit from further training to address the challenging demands of conversations with people approaching the end of life” (NHS). One of the major factors in these discussions is the age of the patient in question. Since it’s not usual for a family member to die before they are old and considered elderly, different situations are in need of different responses. Especially in the case of a child, teenage, or any other death for people under the age of 60. The dialogue between the patient and doctor or any other health care official is greatly influenced if the patient is a minor or an adult. Conversation structure and even the person the professional is likely to have a conversation with might change.
